وغابَ الصدقُ عنّا فانتهينا

كأنّ الصدقَ في الدنيا حرامُ

كأنّ الصدقَ في الدنيا حرامُ

And truth vanished from us, so we came to an end.

Truthfulness has left us, so we are finished

As though truth were forbidden in this world.

As if truthfulness in life is forbidden

تناءينا فماتَ الوصلُ حُزناً

تناءينا فماتَ الوصلُ حُزناً

ويا قلبي على اللُقيا السلامُ

ويا قلبي على اللُقيا السلامُ

We grew apart, so our bond died of sorrow.

We have parted, so companionship has died of sorrow

And, O my heart, farewell to reunion.

And oh my heart, farewell to acquaintances

فوا أسفي على من كان يوماً

فوا أسفي على من كان يوماً

صديقاً، ثمّ ضيّعَهُ الزحامُ

صديقاً، ثمّ ضيّعَهُ الزحامُ

So, alas for one who was once

Alas for those who were once

A friend, then lost to the crowd.

Friends, but whom crowds made strangers

كظِلٍ في النهارِ أراهُ قُربي

كظِلٍ في النهارِ أراهُ قُربي

ويهجُرني إذا حلّ الظلامُ

ويهجُرني إذا حلّ الظلامُ

Like a shadow in the daytime, I see him near me,

Like a shadow by day I see them near

And he abandons me when darkness falls.

Yet by night's darkness estranged they remain
