قلبيmy heart الذيwhich كانwas مثلlike الزهرِthe blossoms ريّاناwell-watered
ماwhat بالُهُis the matter with it صارَbecame بعدafter الحُبِّlove ظمآناthirsty
My heart, which was well-watered like the blossoms,
My heart that was like a flourishing flower
What ails it, that after love it has grown thirsty?
Why has it become thirsty after love?
يُلَملِمُgathers up النبضَthe pulse فيwithin جنبَيّmy two sides مُنكسِراًbroken
حيناًat times، وينبِضُand beats بالأشواقِwith longings أحياناsometimes
Broken, it gathers up its pulse within my sides,
It beats painfully in my broken ribs
At times, and at other times it beats with longing.
Sometimes, and throbs with passion other times
لاnot الليلُthe night يُطفئُextinguishes ماwhat يطويهِit enfolds it مِنof ألمٍpain
ولاnor الصباحُthe morning يداويheals فيهِwithin it تِحناناintense yearning
Night does not quench the pain it holds,
Neither does the night extinguish the pain it harbors
Nor does morning heal the yearning within it.
Nor does the morning heal the tenderness in it
أوّاهُalas كمhow often باتتspent the night الأشواقُlongings توجِعُنيhurt me
ماhow أعذبَsweet الحبّlove لولاwere it not for أنهُthat it هاناgrew cheap
Alas, how often longings have tormented me through the night!
Oh how the passions have pained me through the nights
How sweet love would be, had it not grown cheap!
How sweet is love, if not for the fact that it has become humiliated
شُكراًthanks لمنto those who أشعلواthey kindled فيin القلبِthe heart حُبّهُمُlove for them
وقدّموهُand they offered it إلىto النسيانِoblivion قُرباناas a sacrifice
Thanks to those who kindled love for themselves in the heart,
Thanks to those who ignited their love in my heart
And offered it to oblivion as a sacrifice,
And offered it to oblivion as an offering
وأيقظواand they awakened فيهwithin it نبضاًa pulse صادقاًtrue ونَسُواْand they forgot
أنّthat الذيthe one who يحمِلُbears الإحساسَfeeling إنساناa human being
And awakened a true pulse within it, and forgot
And awakened in it a sincere pulse, and forgot
That the one who bears feeling is a human being.
That the one who carries feeling is human
سألتكُمI implored you بالذيby that which أوهىweakened مشاعِرَكُمyour feelings
ردّواgive back إليّto me هدوئيmy calm للذيto what كاناit was
I implore you, by that which weakened your feelings,
I asked you by what has weakened your feelings
Restore my calm to me as it once was.
Give me back my calmness as it was
