What heart can survive your rejection?

And is it not enough that I have melted with love?

Passionate longing has left of me nothing but

a phantom, wasted by sickness and grown thin,

and tears that longing has made flow until

they outpaced the tears of the cloud.

So grant, as alms, a glance from you to heal

the sickness of a heart laid low by love.

Love had left a little of it,

then rejection melted away what still remained.

Do not ask me about any part of what I endure

from love, for I have no power to speak.

    فَهْيَ أَدْرَى بِكُلِّ مَا بِتُّ أَلْقَى

    Ask, if you wish, the stars of night about me;

for they know best all that I endure through the night:

a breath too weak to be discerned, and a body

through which wasting sickness spread, leaving it prostrate.

So be gentle with a soul worn thin by

longing till it melted, and with tears that never cease.

If rejection is your wont, then my heart

is content with you, though through you it has come to suffer.

So peace be upon you from me, for I

have died of longing; and God is better and more enduring.
