بَلِينَاwe have worn out وَسِرْبالُwhile the robe of الزَّمَانِtime جَدِيدُnew
وَهَلْand is there لامْرِئٍfor anyone فيin الْعَالَمِينَall the worlds خُلُودُimmortality
We have worn out, yet time's robe is new.
We have worn out, yet time's robe is ever new,
And is there immortality for anyone in all the worlds?
Is immortality granted to any soul?
قَضَىdied آدَمٌAdam فيin الدَّهْرِtime وَهْوَthough he was أَبُوthe father of الْوَرَىhumankind
وَكُلُّand all الَّذِيwho مِنْfrom صُلْبِهِhis loins سَيبِيدُwill perish
Adam died in the course of time, though he was humankind's father.
Adam passed in this life, father of mankind,
And all who came from his loins will perish.
And all who come from his loins shall perish too.
فَلاso do not تَبْكِweep for مَيْتاًa dead man حَانَhas come يَوْمُthe day of رَحِيلِهِhis departure
فَلِلْمَوْتِfor toward death مَاthe act of يَمْضِيgoes forth الْفَتَىa man وَيَرُودُand roams
So do not weep for a dead man whose day of departure has come.
Then weep not for one whose day of death has come,
For a man's going forth and roaming are toward death.
For death takes all and man shall fade and rue.
وَلاand do not تَلْتَمِسْseek أَمْرَاًa thing يَزِيدُكَheightens your يَقْظَةًawareness
فَلَيْسَfor there is not لإِدْرَاكِfor attaining اليَقِينِcertainty مَزِيدُanything further
And seek nothing that would heighten your awareness.
Seek not that which wakes you more while in this life,
For there is nothing beyond attaining certainty.
For sure insight's gain has no increase thereto.
دَعِlet الْفَلَكَthe celestial sphere الدَوَّارَrevolving يَجْرِيrun its course وَلاand do not تَسَلْask
أَفَوَّزَhas died? كَهْلٌa middle-aged man أَمْor أَهَلَّcried out at birth وَلِيدُa newborn
Let the revolving celestial sphere run its course, and do not ask
Let the revolving heavens run their course nor ask
Whether a middle-aged man has died or a newborn has cried.
If an elder triumphed or a babe withdrew.
فَمَاfor ... is not هَذِهِthis الدُّنْيَاworld وَإِنْeven if جَلَّis great قَدْرُهَاits worth
سِوَىbut مُهْلَةٍa respite نَأْتِيwe come لَهَاto it وَنَعُودُand we return
For this world, however great its worth,
For what is this world, though grand its legend be,
Is but a respite to which we come and from which we return.
But a hostel we come to and thence ensue?
تَبُوخُdie away بِهَاin it الأَنْفَاسُbreaths وَهْيَwhile they are نَسَائِمٌbreezes
وَتَعْفُوand vanish بِهَاin it الأَبْدَانُbodies وَهْيَwhile they are صعِيدُdust
Breaths die away within it, breezes that they are,
By it souls breathe their last, which are but winds,
And bodies vanish within it, dust that they are.
And bodies moulder, which are but dust and dew.
فَيَاso, O ضَارِباًone traveling فِيthrough الأَرْضِthe earth يَرْتَادُseeking غَايَةًa goal
رُوَيْدَكَtake your time إِنَّindeed الْفَوْزَsuccess مِنْكَfrom you بَعِيدُfar
So, O traveler through the earth, seeking a goal,
So you who walk the earth seeking a far goal,
Take your time; indeed, success is far from you.
Hold back, for triumph from you is far and few.
