لَكَto You الْحَمْدُpraise إِنَّindeed الْخَيْرَgoodness مِنْكَfrom You وَإِنَّنِيand indeed I
لَكَ الْحَمْدُ إِنَّ الْخَيْرَ مِنْكَ وَإِنَّنِي
لِصُنْعِكَfor Your beneficence يَاO رَبَّLord of السَّمَواتِthe heavens شَاكِرُgrateful
لِصُنْعِكَ يَا رَبَّ السَّمَواتِ شَاكِرُ
To You belongs praise: goodness comes from You, and I am
You deserve all praise, for all good comes from You,
grateful for Your beneficence, O Lord of the heavens.
And I am ever thankful, O Lord of the heavens, for Your blessings.
فَأَنْتَfor You الَّذِيthe One who أَوْلَيْتَنِيYou bestowed upon me كُلَّevery نِعْمَةٍblessing
فَأَنْتَ الَّذِي أَوْلَيْتَنِي كُلَّ نِعْمَةٍ
وَهَذَّبْتَنِيand You refined me حَتَّىuntil اصْطَفَتْنِيchose me الْعَشَائِرُthe clans
وَهَذَّبْتَنِي حَتَّى اصْطَفَتْنِي الْعَشَائِرُ
For You are the One who bestowed every blessing upon me
You have granted me every grace,
and refined me until the clans chose me.
And refined me, till the clans chose me.
فَقَرِّبْso bring near لِيَto me الْخَيْرَthe good الَّذِيthat أَنَاI رَاغِبٌdesirous of
فَقَرِّبْ لِيَ الْخَيْرَ الَّذِي أَنَا رَاغِبٌ
وَبَاعِدْنِيَand keep me far from الشَّرَّthe evil الَّذِيthat أَنَاI حَاذِرُwary of
وَبَاعِدْنِيَ الشَّرَّ الَّذِي أَنَا حَاذِرُ
So bring near to me the good that I desire,
So bring near the good that I yearn for,
and keep me far from the evil that I fear.
And distance the evil that I shun.
فَلَيْسَfor there is no لِمَنْfor whomever تُقْصِيهِYou keep him far away فِيamong النَّاسِthe people نَافِعٌone who benefits
فَلَيْسَ لِمَنْ تُقْصِيهِ فِي النَّاسِ نَافِعٌ
وَلَيْسَand there is no لِمَنْfor whomever تُدْنِيهِYou draw him near فِيamong النَّاسِthe people ضَائِرُone who harms
وَلَيْسَ لِمَنْ تُدْنِيهِ فِي النَّاسِ ضَائِرُ
For among people none can benefit the one You keep far away,
For he whom You deny has no benefactor among men,
and among people none can harm the one You draw near.
And he whom You favour has no foiler among men.
وَلاand no لاِمْرِئٍfor a man أَلْهَمْتَهُYou inspired him with الرُّشْدَright guidance خَاذلٌone who forsakes
وَلا لاِمْرِئٍ أَلْهَمْتَهُ الرُّشْدَ خَاذلٌ
وَلاand no لاِمْرِئٍfor a man أَوْرَدْتَهُYou led him into الْغَيَّerror نَاصِرُa helper
وَلا لاِمْرِئٍ أَوْرَدْتَهُ الْغَيَّ نَاصِرُ
Nor is there anyone to forsake a man whom You have inspired with right guidance,
No guide fails he who is guided by You to rectitude,
nor anyone to aid a man whom You have led into error.
And no champion aids he whom You lead astray.
فَإِنْso if أَدْرَكَتْattained نَفْسِيmy soul الْمَرَامَthe goal وَلَمْand did not أَقُمْI stand
فَإِنْ أَدْرَكَتْ نَفْسِي الْمَرَامَ وَلَمْ أَقُمْ
مَقَامَin the position of ضَلِيعٍone proficient بِالَّذِيin what أَنْتَYou آمِرُcommanding
مَقَامَ ضَلِيعٍ بِالَّذِي أَنْتَ آمِرُ
So if my soul attains its goal, yet I do not fulfill
If my soul attains its hopes, yet I do not take
the role of one proficient in what You command,
The stand of one compliant with Your commands,
فَلاthen may no لاحَshine لِيfor me فيat ذُرْوَةِthe summit of الْمَجْدِglory كَوْكَبٌstar
فَلا لاحَ لِي في ذُرْوَةِ الْمَجْدِ كَوْكَبٌ
وَلاand may no طَارَfly لِيfor me فِيat قُنَّةِthe peak of الْعِزِّhonor طَائِرُbird
وَلا طَارَ لِي فِي قُنَّةِ الْعِزِّ طَائِرُ
then may no star shine for me at glory's summit,
Then no morning star shines for me at the peak of glory,
and may no bird fly for me at honor's peak.
And no bird soars for me to the nest of honour.
