دَعْspare حَبِيبَthe beloved of الْقَلْبِthe heart يَاO سَقَمُsickness
دَعْ حَبِيبَ الْقَلْبِ يَا سَقَمُ
فَبِنَفْسِيso in me لاnot بِهِin him الأَلَمُthe pain
فَبِنَفْسِي لا بِهِ الأَلَمُ
Spare the heart's beloved, O sickness;
Leave off, O sickness, him who is the heart's beloved!
So let the pain be in me, not in him.
For it is I, not he, who feels the pain.
كَيْفَhow حَلَّsettled السُّقْمُsickness فِيin بَدَنٍa body
كَيْفَ حَلَّ السُّقْمُ فِي بَدَنٍ
خُلِقَتْwere created مِنْfrom حُسْنِهِits beauty النِّعَمُblessings
خُلِقَتْ مِنْ حُسْنِهِ النِّعَمُ
How has sickness settled in a body
How has sickness come to dwell in a body
From whose beauty blessings were created?
That was created from his perfect grace?
يَاoh لَهَاhow great it is مِنْof لَوْعَةٍburning anguish شَعَبَتْhas split
يَا لَهَا مِنْ لَوْعَةٍ شَعَبَتْ
رُكْنَthe pillar of قَلْبِيmy heart وَهْوَwhile it was مُلْتَئِمُwhole
رُكْنَ قَلْبِي وَهْوَ مُلْتَئِمُ
Oh, what burning anguish has split
O what an anguish that has cloven asunder
The pillar of my heart, though it was whole!
The cornerstone of my heart while it was healed!
مَنَعُونِيthey barred me عَنْfrom زِيَارَتِهِvisiting him
مَنَعُونِي عَنْ زِيَارَتِهِ
وَحِمَىand the precinct of قَلْبِيmy heart لَهُfor him حَرَمُa sanctuary
وَحِمَى قَلْبِي لَهُ حَرَمُ
They barred me from visiting him,
They have denied me the right to visit him,
Yet my heart's precinct is a sanctuary for him.
Yet my heart's love for him remains inviolate.
حَكَمُواthey judged أَنِّيthat I am بِهِfor him دَنِفٌlovesick
حَكَمُوا أَنِّي بِهِ دَنِفٌ
أَنَاI رَاضٍcontent بِالَّذِيwith what حَكَمُواthey judged
أَنَا رَاضٍ بِالَّذِي حَكَمُوا
They judged that I am lovesick for him;
They have judged that I am evilly disposed to him,
I am content with their judgment.
While I accept what they have judged.
أَوَّلُواthey construed وَجْدِيmy passion بِهِfor him عَبَثاًas frivolity
أَوَّلُوا وَجْدِي بِهِ عَبَثاً
لَيْتَهُمْif only they قَالُواhad spoken بِمَاof what عَلِمُواthey knew
لَيْتَهُمْ قَالُوا بِمَا عَلِمُوا
They construed my passion for him as frivolity;
They have falsely deemed my love a madness,
If only they had spoken of what they knew.
Would that they had said what they knew!
أَتْهَمُونِيthey accused me فِيconcerning مَوَدَّتِهِaffection for him
أَتْهَمُونِي فِي مَوَدَّتِهِ
وَالْهَوَىand love مِنْof شَأْنِهِits nature التُّهَمُaccusations
وَالْهَوَى مِنْ شَأْنِهِ التُّهَمُ
They accused me over my affection for him;
They accuse me of love for him,
And accusations are part of love's nature.
While accusations of love are themselves a madness.
رَبِّmy Lord قَنِّعْهُمْcloak them بِفِرْيَتِهِمْin their slander
رَبِّ قَنِّعْهُمْ بِفِرْيَتِهِمْ
وَانْتَصِفْand exact justice مِنْهُمْfrom them بِمَاfor what زَعَمُواthey alleged
وَانْتَصِفْ مِنْهُمْ بِمَا زَعَمُوا
My Lord, cloak them in their slander,
My Lord, make them content with their lie
And exact justice from them for what they alleged.
And take vengeance on them for what they claimed.
وَاشْفِand heal نَفْسَاًa soul أَنْتَYou بَارِئُهَاits Creator
وَاشْفِ نَفْسَاً أَنْتَ بَارِئُهَا
فَإِلَيْكَfor to You الْبُرْءُhealing وَالسَّقَمُand sickness
فَإِلَيْكَ الْبُرْءُ وَالسَّقَمُ
And heal a soul whose Creator You are;
Heal a soul that You Yourself did create,
For to You belong healing and sickness.
For with You is the one who makes whole or makes sick.
