رُدُّواrestore عَلَيَّto me الصِّبَاyouth مِنْfrom عَصْرِيَmy age الْخَالِيbygone
وَهَلْand can? يَعُودُreturn سَوَادُthe blackness اللّمَّةِof the locks الْبَالِيfaded
Restore to me the youth of my bygone days.
Give me back my youth from my empty days,
And can the faded blackness of my locks return?
Will the darkness of faded hair ever return?
مَاضٍa bygone time مِنَof الْعَيْشِlife مَاnever لاحَتْappeared مَخَايِلُهُits images
فِيon صَفْحَةِthe page الْفِكْرِof thought إِلاexcept that هَاجَstirred بَلْبَالِيmy anguish
A stretch of life gone by—never do its images appear
What my imagination conjured of the past,
On the page of thought without rousing my anguish.
Stirred in the pages of thought my turmoil.
سَلَتْfound solace قُلُوبٌhearts فَقَرَّتْand so rested فيin مَضَاجِعِهَاtheir beds
بَعْدَafter الْحَنِينِlonging وَقَلْبِيbut my heart لَيْسَis not بِالسَّالِيconsoled
Hearts found solace and rested in their beds
Hearts have yearned and grieved on their beds,
After longing, but my heart finds no solace.
After longing, while my heart is not yet tranquil.
لَمْdid not يَدْرِknow مَنْwhoever بَاتَspent the night مَسْرُوراًdelighted بِلَذَّتِهِin his pleasure
أَنِّيthat I بِنَارِin the fire الأَسَىof sorrow مِنْfrom هَجْرِهِhis abandonment صَالِيburning
The one who spent the night delighted in his pleasure did not know
Those who delight in their pleasure know not,
That I burn in sorrow's fire from his abandonment.
That I burn with the fire of his abandonment.
يَاO غَاضِبينَangry ones عَليْنَاwith us هَلْis there? إِلَىtoward عِدَةٍa promise
بِالْوَصْلِof reunion يَوْمٌa day أُنَاغِيI tenderly address فِيهِin it إِقْبَالِيmy good fortune
O you angry with us, is there hope of a promise
O you who are angry with us, will there come a day,
Of reunion—a day when I may commune with my good fortune?
When union will comfort my acceptance?
غِبْتُمْyou vanished فَأَظْلَمَso darkened يَوْمِيmy day بَعْدَafter فُرْقَتِكُمْyour departure
وَسَاءَand worsened صُنْعُthe dealings اللَّيَالِيof the nights بَعْدَafter إِجْمَالِkindness
You vanished, and my day darkened after your departure;
You were absent and my days darkened after you left,
And the nights' dealings grew cruel after kindness.
The nights fared badly after gathering.
قَدْindeed كُنْتُI was أَحْسَبُنِيthinking myself مِنْكُمْwith you عَلَىin ثِقَةٍtrust
حَتَّىuntil مُنِيتُI was afflicted بِمَاwith what لَمْdid not يَجْرِpass فِيthrough بَالِيmy mind
I had thought myself secure with you,
I thought I could trust in you,
Until I was afflicted with what never crossed my mind.
Until I was struck with what I never imagined.
لَمْdid not أَجْنِI commit فِيin الْحُبِّlove ذَنْبَاًa sin أَسْتَحِقُّI deserve بِهِfor it
عَتْبَاًreproach وَلَكِنَّهَاbut it is تَحْرِيفُdistortion أَقْوَالِof words
In love I committed no sin that deserved
I have not sinned in love to deserve,
Reproach; rather, it is the distortion of words.
Reproach, but these are distorted words.
وَمَنْand whoever أَطَاعَheeded رُوَاةَtellers السُّوءِof evil نَفَّرَهُdrove him away
عَنِfrom الصَّدِيقِthe friend سَمَاعُhearing الْقِيلِgossip وَالْقَالِand hearsay
And whoever heeds the tellers of evil is driven away
He who obeys the wicked talebearers,
From his friend by listening to gossip and hearsay.
Will be repelled from the friend by hearing nonsense.
أَدْهَىthe direst الْمَصَائِبِcalamities غَدْرٌbetrayal قَبْلَهُbefore it ثِقَةٌtrust
وَأَقْبَحُand the ugliest الظُّلْمِinjustice صَدٌّrejection بَعْدَafter إِقْبَالِwelcome
The direst calamity is betrayal preceded by trust;
The most painful calamity is treason after trust,
And the ugliest injustice is rejection after welcome.
The ugliest injustice, rejection after acceptance.
لاno عَيْبَfault فِيَّin me سِوَىexcept حُرِّيَّةٍfreedom مَلَكَتْheld sway over
أَعِنَّتِيmy reins عَنْfrom قَبُولِaccepting الذُّلِّhumiliation بِالْمَالِfor money
I have no fault except a freedom that has held
I have no fault but my freedom which,
My reins back from accepting humiliation for money.
Has prevented me from accepting humiliation for wealth.
تَبِعْتُI followed خُطَّةَthe path آبَائِيof my forefathers فَسِرْتُand so walked بِهَاalong it
عَلَىon وَتِيرَةِa steady course آدَابٍof courtesy وَآسَالِand spears
I followed my forefathers' path and walked along it,
I followed the principles of my ancestors,
Following a tradition of courtesy and spears.
On the path of manners and decency.
فَمَاso no يَمُرُّpasses خَيَالُphantom الْغَدْرِof betrayal فِيthrough خَلَدِيmy mind
وَلاnor تَلُوحُappear سِمَاتُmarks الشَّرِّof evil فِيin خَالِيmy character
So no phantom of betrayal passes through my mind,
Never does the specter of betrayal cross my mind,
Nor do the marks of evil show in my character.
Nor do the features of evil appear in my thoughts.
قَلْبِيmy heart سَلِيمٌsound وَنَفْسِيand my soul حُرَّةٌfree وَيَدِيand my hand
مَأْمُونَةٌtrustworthy وَلِسَانِيand my tongue غَيْرُnot خَتَّالِdeceitful
My heart is sound, my soul is free, and my hand
My heart is pure, my soul is free, my hand,
Is trustworthy, and my tongue is not deceitful.
Trustworthy, and my tongue far from pretentiousness.
لَكِنَّنِيbut I فِيin زَمَانٍan age عِشْتُlived مُغْتَرِبَاًa stranger
فِيamong أَهْلِهِits people حِينَwhen قَلَّتْgrew few فِيهِin it أَمْثَالِيthose like me
Yet I have lived in an age as a stranger
But I live in a time in which I am a stranger,
Among its people, when those like me grew few.
Among its people, when few are like me.
بَلَوْتُI tested دَهْرِيmy age فَمَاand not أَحْمَدْتُfound praiseworthy سِيرَتَهُits conduct
فِيin سَابِقٍan earlier time مِنْof لَيَالِيهِits nights وَلاnor تَالِيa later time
I have tested my age and found no cause to praise its conduct,
I have tested my fate and do not praise,
In either its earlier nights or its later ones.
Its nights before or its days after.
حَلَبْتُI milked شَطْرَيْهِits two halves مِنْof يُسْرٍease وَمَعْسرَةٍand hardship
وَذُقْتُand I tasted طَعْمَيْهِits two flavors مِنْof خِصْبٍabundance وَإِمْحَالِand drought
I have milked its two halves: ease and hardship,
I have tasted its sweet and bitter,
And tasted both its flavors: abundance and drought.
Its fertility and infertility.
فَمَاso not أَسِفْتُI grieved لِبُؤْسٍover misery بَعْدَafter مَقْدرَةٍprosperity
وَلاnor فَرِحْتُI rejoiced بِوَفْرٍin plenty بَعْدَafter إِقْلالِpoverty
I did not grieve at misery after prosperity,
So I do not grieve loss after destiny,
Nor rejoice in plenty after want.
Nor rejoice in abundance after scarcity.
عَفَافَةٌself-restraint نَزَّهَتْpurified نَفْسِيmy soul فَمَاso never عَلِقَتْbecame tainted
بِلَوْثَةٍwith a stain مِنْfrom غُبَارِthe dust الذَّمِّof blame أَذْيَالِيmy hems
Self-restraint purified my soul, so never clung
Chastity has purified my soul, it did not cling,
To my hems a stain from the dust of blame.
To the disgraceful dust that tarnishes my honor.
فَالْيَوْمَso today لاnot رَسَنِيmy halter طَوْعُobedient to الْقِيَادِleading وَلاnor
قَلْبِيmy heart إِلَىtoward زَهْرَةِthe bloom الدُّنْيَاof the world بِمَيَّالِinclined
So today my halter does not yield to leading, nor
So today neither does obedience agree with me,
Does my heart incline to the bloom of this world.
Nor does my heart incline towards the flowers of life.
لَمْnot يَبْقَremains لِيfor me أَرَبٌa desire فِيin الدَّهْرِthe age أَطْلُبُهُI seek it
إِلاexcept صَحَابَةُcompanionship حُرٍّa free man صَادِقِsincere in الْخَالِcharacter
No wish remains for me in this age to seek
I have no purpose left in this world to pursue,
Except the companionship of a free man of sincere character.
Except the company of a noble and sincere friend.
وَأَيْنَand where أُدْرِكُcan I attain مَاwhat أَبْغِيهِI seek it مِنْof وَطَرٍa desire
وَالصِّدْقُand truth فِيin الدَّهْرِthe age أَعْيَاbaffled كُلَّevery مُحْتَالِresourceful seeker
And where can I attain the desire I seek,
But where can I obtain what I desire,
When truth in this age has baffled every resourceful seeker?
When honesty in this world tires every fraud.
لاnot فِيin سَرَنْدِيبَSarandib لِيfor me إِلْفٌa companion أُجَاذِبُهُI exchange with him
فَضْلَthe delights of الْحَدِيثِconversation وَلاnor خِلٌّan intimate friend فَيَرْعَىand so cares لِيfor me
In Sarandib I have no companion with whom to exchange
I have no intimate in Serendib to converse with,
Pleasant conversation, nor a close friend to care for me.
No friend to graze with me the prime of discourse.
أَبِيتُI spend the night مُنْفَرِدَاًalone فِيat رَأْسِthe summit شَاهِقَةٍa towering height
مِثْلَlike الْقَطَامِيِّthe falcon فَوْقَabove الْمِرْبَإِthe lookout الْعَالِيhigh
I spend the night alone atop a towering height,
I sleep alone atop a towering peak,
Like a falcon on a lofty lookout.
Like al-Qatami above a lofty watchtower.
إِذَاwhen تَلَفَّتُّI look around لَمْdo not أُبْصِرْsee سِوَىexcept صُوَرٍimages
فِيin الذِّهْنِthe mind يَرْسُمُهَاdraws them نَقَّاشُthe painter آمَالِيof my hopes
When I look around, I see nothing but images
When I look around, I see none but images,
In the mind, drawn by the painter of my hopes.
Drawn by the painter of my hopes.
تَهْفُوtosses بِيَme الرِّيحُthe wind أَحْيَانَاًsometimes وَيَلْحَفُنِيand cloaks me
بَرْدُthe chill الطِّلالِof drizzle بِبُرْدٍin a mantle مِنْهُof itself أَسْمَالِragged
At times the wind tosses me, and I am cloaked
The wind blows me softly at times, and the chill,
By the chill of drizzle in its own ragged mantle.
Of the hills wraps me in its penetrating cold.
فَفِيso in السَّمَاءِthe sky غُيُومٌclouds ذَاتُhaving أَرْوِقَةٍcanopies
وَفِيand in الْفَضَاءِthe open air سُيُولٌtorrents ذَاتُhaving أَوْشَالِtrickles
So in the sky are clouds with canopies,
So there are clouds with spellbinding visions,
And through the air are torrents with trickling streams.
And in the horizon torrents with striking wonders.
كَأَنَّas though قَوْسَthe bow الْغَمَامِof clouds الْغُرِّwhite قَنْطَرَةٌa bridge
As though the bow of the white clouds were a bridge
As if the arc of clouds is an aqueduct,
Arched above swelling, flowing water.
Suspended above the sea’s surging waters.
إِذَاwhen الشُّعَاعُsunlight تَرَاءَىappeared خَلْفَهَاbehind it نَشَرَتْit unfurled
بَدَائِعَاًwonders ذَاتَhaving أَلْوَانٍcolors وَأَشْكَالِand shapes
When sunlight appears behind it, it unfolds
When the rays shine through it disperses,
Marvels of colors and shapes.
Marvels of myriad colors and forms.
فَلَوْso if تَرَانِيyou saw me وَبُرْدِيand my mantle بِالنَّدَىwith dew لَثِقٌsoaked
لَخِلْتَنِيyou would think me فَرْخَa chick طَيْرٍof a bird بَيْنَamid أَدْغَالِthickets
So, if you saw me, my mantle soaked with dew,
If you could see me shivering in the dew, you would think,
You would think me a nestling amid thickets,
I am a fledgling amidst the thickets.
غَالَsnatched away الرَّدَىdeath أَبَوَيْهِits parents فَهْوَso it is مُنْقَطِعٌforsaken
فِيin جَوْفِthe depths غَيْنَاءَa leafy thicket لاno رَاعٍkeeper وَلاnor وَالِيguardian
Whose parents death has snatched away, leaving it forsaken
Fate took both his parents so he is forlorn,
Deep in a leafy thicket, with neither keeper nor guardian.
In the belly of dark gloom without guardian or friend.
أُزَيْغِبَfinely downy الرَّأْسِheaded لَمْnot yet يَبْدُappeared الشَّكِيرُnew feathers بِهِon it
وَلَمْand not يَصُنْit protected نَفْسَهُitself مِنْfrom كَيْدِthe wiles مُغْتَالِa predator
Downy-headed, its new feathers not yet showing,
He twists his neck but no one shows him the way,
And it has not shielded itself from a predator's wiles.
And does not protect himself from the schemer’s ploy.
كَأَنَّهُas though it were كُرَةٌa ball مَلْسَاءُsmooth مِنْof أَدَمٍleather
خَفِيَّةُhidden الدَّرْزِthe seam قَدْalready عُلَّتْwas soaked بِجِرْيالِin crimson dye
Like a smooth ball of leather,
He is like a slippery ball of dark leather,
Its seam hidden, soaked in crimson dye.
Its hidden grooves studded with nails.
يَظَلُّit remains فِيin نَصَبٍweariness حَرَّانَparched مُرْتَقِباًawaiting

It remains weary, parched, awaiting
He remains in anguish expecting,
The quenching of thirst from predawn to evening.
The reverberations of sound amid the dunes.
يَكَادُalmost صَوْتُthe cry الْبُزَاةِof hawks الْقُمْرِpale يَقْذِفُهُflings it

The cry of the pale hawks almost flings it
The clamor of the hunters almost flings,
From its nest amid drifting, swirling dust.
The moon from its lair amidst the soaring dunes.
لاnot يَسْتَطِيعُit can انْطِلاقاًescape مِنْfrom غَيَابَتِهِits dark recess
كَأَنَّمَاas though هُوَit مَعْقُولٌhobbled بِعُقَّالِwith fetters
It cannot escape its dark recess,
He cannot escape from his gloom,
As though it were bound with hobbles.
As if he is shackled in chains.
فَذَاكَso that مِثْلِيis like me وَلَمْand not أَظْلِمْI was unjust وَرُبَّتَمَاand perhaps
فَضَلْتُهُI surpassed it بِجَوَىin burning anguish حُزْنٍof grief وَإِعْوَالِand wailing
That is my likeness, without injustice; perhaps
So he is like me, and I have not wronged him,
I have surpassed it in burning grief and wailing.
By exceeding him in the ardour of sorrow and tribulation.
شَوْقٌlonging وَنَأْيٌand distance وَتَبْرِيحٌand torment وَمَعْتَبَةٌand reproach
يَاO لَلْحَمِيَّةِfor protective honor مِنْat غَدْرِيmy being betrayed وَإِهْمَالِيand my being neglected
Longing, distance, torment, and reproach!
Yearning, remoteness, parting, and vigilance,
O honor, how I am betrayed and neglected!
O for my cruelty and neglect.
أَصْبَحْتُI have become لاnot أَسْتَطِيعُable الثَّوْبَthe robe أَسْحَبُهُto drag it
وَقَدْand once أَكُونُI would be وَضَافِيwhile ample الدِرْعِarmor سِرْبَالِيmy garment
I can no longer drag my robe,
I have become unable to wear my cloak,
Though once ample armor was my garment.
Though I may have to make the coat of mail my attire.
وَلاand not تَكَادُalmost يَدِيmy hand تُجْرِيmoves شَبَاthe point قَلَمِيof my pen
وَكَانَand was طَوْعَobedient to بَنَانِيmy fingers كُلُّevery عَسَّالِquivering lance
And my hand can scarcely move the point of my pen,
My hand can barely move my pen,
Though every quivering lance once obeyed my fingers.
Though it used to obey my creation of prose or verse.
فَإِنْso if يَكُنْit is جَفَّdried عُودِيmy stem بَعْدَafter نَضْرَتِهِits freshness
فَالدَّهْرُfor time مَصْدَرُthe source إِدْبَارٍdecline وَإِقْبَالِand prosperity
So if my branch has dried after its freshness,
If my wood has dried up after its greenery,
Time is the source of decline and prosperity.
Time brings decline and revival.
عَلامَwhy أَجْزَعُshould I despair وَالأَيَّامُand the days تَشْهَدُbear witness لِيfor me
بِصِدْقِto the sincerity مَاof what كَانَwas مِنْof وَسْمِيmy marking وَإِغْفَالِيand my leaving unmarked
Why should I despair, when the days bear witness for me
Why should I despair when the days testify,
To my sincerity in what I marked and what I left unmarked?
To the truth of my imprint and neglect?
رَاجَعْتُI reviewed فِهْرِسَthe catalogue آثَارِيof my deeds فَمَاand not لَمَحَتْglimpsed
بَصِيرَتِيmy insight فِيهِin it مَاanything that يُزْرِيdetracts بِأَعْمَالِيfrom my works
I reviewed the catalogue of my deeds, and never did
I reviewed the index of my works but my insight,
My insight glimpse in it anything that diminished my works.
Did not perceive in it what would equal my deeds.
فَكَيْفَso how يُنْكِرُdeny قَوْمِيmy people فَضْلَthe merit بَادِرَتِيof my initiative
وَقَدْand indeed سَرَتْspread حِكَمِيmy wise sayings فِيهِمْamong them وَأَمْثَالِيand my maxims
How, then, can my people deny the merit of my initiative,
How then can my people deny the merit of my initiative,
When my wisdom and maxims have spread among them?
When my wisdom among them and the likes of me has spread?
أَنَاI ابْنُthe son قَوْلِيof my words وَحَسْبِيand enough for me فِيfor الْفَخَارِpride بِهِin it
وَإِنْalthough غَدَوْتُI have become كَرِيمَnoble in الْعَمِّpaternal uncle والْخَالِand maternal uncle
I am the son of my words; they suffice me for pride,
I am the son of my words and my pride is in them,
Though I have noble paternal and maternal uncles.
Even if I am magnanimous in lineage and descent.
وَلِيand I have مِنَof الشِّعْرِpoetry آيَاتٌverses مُفَصَّلَةٌdistinctly set forth
تَلُوحُshine فِيon وَجْنَةِthe cheek الأَيَّامِof days كَالْخَالِlike a beauty mark
And I have verses of poetry, distinctly set forth,
I have intricate verses in poetry,
Shining like a beauty mark on the cheek of days.
That shine in the garden of time like moles.
يَنْسَىforgets لَهَاbecause of them الْفَاقِدُthe bereaved الْمَحْزُونُgrieving لَوْعَتَهُhis anguish
وَيَهْتَدِيand is guided بِسَنَاهَاby their radiance كُلُّevery قَوَّالِeloquent poet
Through them, the grieving bereaved forgets his anguish,
The bereaved and grieving forget their anguish through them,
And every poet is guided by their radiance.
And every critic is guided by its features.
فَانْظُرْso look لِقَوْلِيat my words تَجِدْyou will find نَفْسِيmy soul مُصَوَّرَةًportrayed
فِيon صَفْحَتَيْهِits two pages فَقَوْلِيfor my words خَطُّthe outline تِمْثَالِيof my likeness
Look, then, at my poetry: you will find my soul portrayed
So look to my words and you will find my soul depicted,
On its two pages, for my poetry outlines my likeness.
In its pages, so my words outline my figure.
وَلاand do not تَغُرَّنْكَdeceive you فِيin الدُّنْيَاthe world مُشَاكَلَةٌresemblance
بَيْنَamong الأَنَامِmankind فَلَيْسَfor it is not النَّبْعُthe nabʿ tree كَالضَّالِlike the ḍāl tree
And do not let resemblance in this world deceive you
Let not disputes in the world deceive you,
Among mankind: the nabʿ tree is not like the ḍāl tree.
The spring is not like those who go astray.
إِنَّindeed ابْنَthe son آدَمَof Adam لَوْلاbut for عَقْلُهُhis reason شَبحٌa bodily form
Indeed, without his reason, the son of Adam is a bodily form
Truly, the son of Adam without his reason is but,
Composed of bones with joints.
A specter assembled from bones and joints.
