يَاO مَنْyou who رَأَىsaw الشَّادِنَthe young gazelle فيin سِرْبِهِhis herd
يَتِيهُhe struts proudly بِالْحُسْنِin his beauty عَلَىover تِرْبِهِhis peer
O you who saw the young gazelle amid his herd,
O you who saw the gazelle wandering
vaunting his beauty over his peer.
With beauty on his pasture
أَرْسَلَhe let loose فَرْعَيْهِhis two tresses لِكَيso that يَعْبَثَاthey both might play
بِأُكْرَتَيْwith the two globes of نَهْدَيْهِhis two breasts مِنْout of عُجْبِهِhis vanity
He let his two tresses loose to play
He sent his twigs to play
with the twin globes of his breasts, out of vanity.
With the apples of his breasts out of self-conceit
أَحْتَمِلُI endure الْمَكْرُوهَhardship مِنْfor أَجْلِهِhis sake
وَأَبْذُلُand I lavish الْمَالَwealth عَلَىfor حُبِّهِlove of him
I endure hardship for his sake,
I endure disliked things for his sake
and lavish wealth for love of him.
And spend money for love of him
قَدْindeed لامَنِيhe blamed me الْعَاذِلُthe reproacher فيهِover him ولَوْand if
رَأَىhe saw الْهُدَىthe right path أَقْصَرَhe would desist عَنْfrom عَتْبِهِhis reproach
The reproacher has indeed blamed me over him; yet if
The blamer blamed me for him, even if
he saw the right path, he would cease his reproach.
He saw guidance shorter than his censure
وَهَلْand can يُطِيقُmanage الْمَرْءُa person سَتْرَconcealing الْهَوَىlove
مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter ماwhen اسْتَوْلَىit took possession عَلَىof لُبِّهِhis mind
And can a person conceal love
And can a person conceal his passion
once it has taken possession of his mind?
After it dominated his heart?
تَقَلُّبُthe shifting of الْعَينِthe eye دَلِيلٌa sign عَلَىof

The shifting of the eye is a sign of
The turning of the eye indicates
what a person harbors in his heart.
What the human concealed in his heart
ياAh سامَحَmay forgive اللهُGod عُيُونَthe eyes of الْمَهَاthe oryxes
فَهُنَّfor they عَوْنُthe aid of الدَّهْرِTime فِيin حَرْبِهِhis war
Ah, may God forgive the eyes of the oryxes,
O may God forgive the eyes of the crazed
for they aid Time in his war.
For they are the aid of fate in its war
أَمَاdid ... not? كَفَىsuffice ماwhat جَرَّbrought about أَحْدَاثُهُhis calamities
حَتَّىthat دَعَاhe summoned الْغِيدَthe graceful maidens إِلىto حِزْبِهِhis camp
Was what his calamities brought not enough,
Isn't it enough what its events pulled
that he summoned the graceful maidens to his camp?
Until it called the lion to its party?
