يَاO كَوْكَبَstar الصُّبْحِthe morning مَتَىwhen يَنْقَضِيwill end
عُمْرُthe life of الدُّجَىdarkness يَاO كَوْكَبَstar الصُّبْحِthe morning
O morning star, when will it end—
O morning star, when will the night's reign end?
The life of darkness, O morning star?
O morning star, when will the darkness fade?
قَدْalready سَدَّhas shut حِصْنُthe fortress of اللَّيْلِthe night أَبْوَابَهُits gates
فَاتْلُso recite عَلَيْهِover it سُورَةَthe surah of الْفَتْحِVictory
The fortress of night has shut its gates;
The fortress of night has shut its gates.
So recite over it the Surah of Victory.
Recite the Chapter of Victory upon it.
إِنِّيindeed I أَرَىsee أَنْجُمَهُits stars قَدْalready وَنَتْhave grown weary
فَمَاso no لَهَاfor them أَيْدstrength عَلَىfor السَّبْحِswimming
Indeed, I see its stars have grown weary;
I see its stars have faded,
So they have no strength to swim.
So it has no hand upon the rosary.
وَقَدْand already بَدَاhas appeared ذُوone with ذَنَبٍa tail طَالِعاًrising
كَأَنَّهُas though it were سُنْبُلَةُan ear of الْقَمْحِwheat
And a comet has appeared, rising,
A tailed one appeared rising
As though it were an ear of wheat.
As if it were an ear of wheat.
