أَيُّهَاO you الْمَغْرُورُthe deluded one مَهْلاslow down
لَسْتَyou are not لِلتَّكْرِيمِof being honored أَهْلاworthy
O deluded one, slow down!
O deluded one, wait!
You are not worthy of honor.
You are not worthy of honor.
كَيْفَhow صَادَفْتَyou encountered الأَمَانِيthe wishes
هَلْdid رَأَيْتَyou see الصَّعْبَthe difficult سَهْلاeasy
How did you find those wishes?
How did you come upon wishes?
Did you find the difficult easy?
Have you seen the difficult become easy?
خِلْتَهَاyou thought them مَاءًwater نَمِيراًpure and sweet
فَاشْرَبَنْso do drink عَلاًa second draught وَنَهْلاand a first draught
You thought them pure, sweet water;
You left it as flowing water,
Then drink, draught after draught.
So drink high and low.
أَيْنَwhere أَهْلُthe inhabitants الدَّارِof the house فَانْظُرْso look
هَلْdo تَرَىyou see بِالدَّارِin the house أَهْلاany inhabitants
Where are the household's people? Look:
Where are the people of the house? Look,
Do you see anyone in the house?
Do you see anyone in the house?
رُبَّmany a حُسْنٍbeauty فِيin ثِيَابٍgarments
عَادَbecame غِسْلِيناًpus وَمُهْلاand molten metal
Many a beauty in garments
Many a beauty in clothes
Has turned to pus and molten metal.
Returns soiled and faded.
وَعُيُونٍand eyes كُنَّwere سُودَاًblack
صِرْنَthey became عِنْدَat الْمَوْتِdeath شُهْلاgrayish-blue
And eyes that once were black
And eyes that were black
Turned gray-blue at death.
Become blue at death.
فِيamong الْوَرَىhumankind خِزْيَاًdisgrace وَبَهْلاand a curse
Every transgressor shall encounter
Every reveler will find
Among humankind, disgrace and a curse.
Shame and ruin in the land.
إِنَّمَاnothing but الدُّنْيَاthis world غُرُورٌdelusion
لَمْdid not تَدَعْspare طِفْلاًa child وَكَهْلاand a middle-aged man
This world is nothing but delusion;
The world is but delusion,
It has spared neither child nor middle-aged man.
It spared no child or elder.
كَمْhow many حَكِيمٍa wise man ضَلَّwent astray فِيهَاin it
فَاكْتَسَىso he donned بِالْعِلْمِthrough knowledge جَهْلاignorance
How many a wise man went astray in it,
How many a wise one went astray in it
And so, through knowledge, donned ignorance.
And gained ignorance through knowledge.
