My two friends, has the night grown long, or have

Its stars been shackled, or has tomorrow strayed from its course?

I spend the night sorrowful in Serendib, awake,

Through the long nights, while the carefree sleep.

    كَذَا النَّفْسُ تَهْوَى غَيْرَ مَا تَمْلِكُ الْيَدُ

    I seek what I cannot pursue;

Thus the soul desires what the hand does not possess.

When a breeze wafts from the direction of Helwan,

A flame leaps within my heart, blazing.

And alas, no season after youth

Is sweet, nor any familiar haunt after al-Jazira.

Youth, and friends whose affection I have lost—

And every man in life knows misery and happiness.

And I never feared that I would live in exile,

Where a little black servant consoles me.
