My life is ruined by love,

And my state in it is unsettled.

    I spend the night dejected,

And my heart pounds within my breast.

So all my sleep is sleeplessness,

And all my life is sorrow.

And what I conceal of my yearning

and my sorrow is beyond what I can describe.

Is there, then, a friend who pities

what I suffer, and turns to me in kindness?

    Will love kill me unjustly,

Though none among humankind can take my place?

And grant that I am a knight of battle—

I charge into it, and it gives way.

    Is love not a sovereign

    before whom the worlds tremble?

    If love is my adversary,

Then tell me: how can I gain redress?
