دِينِيmy faith الْحَنِيفُupright (monotheistic) وَرَبِّيَand my Lord اللَّهُGod
وَشَهَادَتِيand my testimony أَنْthat لَيْسَthere is not إِلَّاexcept هُوHe
Mine is the upright faith, and my Lord is God;
My religion is Hanif and my Lord is Allah
And my testimony is that there is none but Him.
My testimony that none but He exists
لاno جَاهَhonor لِيfor me إِلَّاexcept بِطَاعَتِهِthrough obedience to Him
وَلَنِعْمَand truly excellent is عُقْبَىthe reward of الطَّاعَةِobedience الْجَاهُhonor
I have no honor except through obedience to Him;
Glory comes to me only through obeying Him
And how fine a reward for obedience is honor!
How excellent the aftermath of obedience and glory!
أَنَاI خَاشِعٌhumbly reverent لِجَلالِbefore the majesty of قُدْرَتِهِHis power
مُتَقَلِّبُturning الْجَنْبَيْنِboth sides أَوَّاهُever sighing
I am humbled before the majesty of His power,
I am humble before the majesty of His power
Turning from side to side, ever sighing.
Turning my sides over its severity
فَأَضَالِعِيso my ribs لِلْوَجْدِfrom longing نَارُa fire of غَضىًghada wood
وَمَحَاجِرِيand my eye sockets بِالدَّمْعِwith tears أَمْوَاهُwaters
So my ribs, from longing, are a fire of ghada wood,
So my ribs are aflame with fervent love
And my eye sockets are pools of tears.
And my cheeks flowing with tears
زَهَتِgrew radiant الْقُلُوبُthe hearts بِنُورِwith the light of حِكْمَتِهِHis wisdom
وَتَعَطَّرَتْand grew fragrant بِالذِّكْرِwith remembrance أَفْوَاهُmouths
Hearts have grown radiant with the light of His wisdom,
Hearts are adorned with the light of His wisdom
And mouths have grown fragrant with remembrance.
And mouths perfumed with His remembrance
أَنَاI أُمَّةٌa nation وَحْدِيby myself عَلَىin سَرَفٍexcess
فِيin حُبِّهِlove for Him وَالنَّاسُand the people أَشْبَاهُalike
I am a nation unto myself, going to excess
I am a nation alone in my excess
In my love for Him, while other people are alike.
In my love for Him though people are alike
إِنْif تَاهَglories غَيْرِيsomeone other than me بِالزَّمَانِin the age فَلِيthen I have
قَلْبٌa heart بِذِكْرِin the remembrance of اللَّهِGod تَيَّاهُever glorying
If another glories in the age, I have
If others go astray in these times
A heart that ever glories in the remembrance of God.
A heart remembering Allah wanders
