It is as I said—beware of it in the morning:

a raid that fills the air with lances.

It leaves water that the thirsty cannot swallow,

and makes inviolable blood lawful to shed.

Within it, you see none but a peerless warrior,

who relishes spear-thrusts with valor and delight.

Devoted to war, he has no taste for

ease, nor does he keep company with a full-hipped maiden.

A kindler of battle, a man of morning forays

that turn the earth into a scene of mourning and cries.

He is never seen complaining of the ways of

    Time, nor trifling, nor jesting.

He does the deed that dazzles

people, and eyes gaze toward it, eagerly uplifted.

Not like one who asks delegations about

the news out of helplessness, and watches shadowy figures.

So take heed, you who are outspoken in

speech, and do not call forth lamentation over yourself.

Indeed, within these two cloaks of mine is a lion

that breaks an adversary's neck or blunts weapons.

His fingers, clinging fast to the spear,

fill the earth and sky with wounds.

I come from a people noble in the eyes of

Time; they endowed it with glory and goodness.

With lances they scaled the summits of glory,

and made ready a key for its gate.

They dwelt on earth for a time, then passed away,

just as generations vanished, swept away.

And after them, nights came upon me

in whose sky I see no lamp.

So may the Sender of rain water them with a downpour

that makes vegetation a sash for the bare earth.
