مَجْمُوعَةِcombined الأَجْزَاءِthe parts فِيin أَخْلاقِهِhis character
Indeed, the son of Adam has four natures,
The son of Adam has four natures
Their parts combined within his character.
Combined in the morals of his character
تَبْدُوappear فَوَاعِلُهَاtheir workings عَلَىupon حَرَكَاتِهِhis movements
فِيin بَطْشِهِhis violence وَسُكُونِهِand his stillness وَنِزَاقِهِand his rashness
Their workings show in his movements,
Their doer appears in his movements
In his violence, his stillness, and his rashness.
In his violence, calm, and irritation
فَإِذَاso when تَغَلَّبَprevails وَاحِدٌone مِنْهَاof them عَلَىover
أَقْرَانِهِits peers أَدَّىleads إِلَىto إِقْلاقِهِhis unrest
So when one of them prevails over
So if one of them prevails over
Its peers, it brings him unrest.
Its peers, it leads to his disturbance
بَيْنَاwhile تَرَاهُyou see him كَالزُّلالِlike clear water لَطَافَةًgentleness
أَلْفَيْتَهُyou found him كَالنَّارِlike fire فِيin إِحْرَاقِهِhis burning
While you see him gentle as clear water,
While you see him as gentle as dew
You find him like fire in his burning,
You find him as hot as fire in his burning
أَوْor كَالتُّرَابِlike earth يَهِيلُcrumbles مِنْfrom عَقَدَاتِهِits clods
أَوْor كَالْهَوَاءِlike air يَجُولُroams فِيin آفَاقِهِhis horizons
Or like earth, crumbling from its clods,
Or like dust pouring from his complexes
Or like air, roaming through his horizons.
Or like the air wandering in its horizons
فَإِذَاso when تَعَادَلَbecame equal جَمْعُهَاall of them وَتَوَازَنَتْand became balanced
حَرَكَاتُهَاtheir movements كَانَتْwere دَلِيلَa sign وِفَاقِهِhis harmony
So when all are evenly matched, with balance in
So when their collection is balanced
Their movements, these are a sign of his harmony.
Their movements become a sign of his concord
وَالْمَرْءُand a man مَهْمَاwhatever كَانَmay be فِيin أَفْعَالِهِhis deeds
لاnot يَنْتَهِيends up إِلَّاexcept إِلَىto أَعْرَاقِهِhis roots
And a man, whatever his deeds may be,
And man no matter what his actions are
Ends nowhere but at his roots.
Only ends up at the throats of his fellows
