إِنِّيindeed I إِذَاif ماan emphatic particle الْخِلُّthe close friend خَاسَwas faithless بِعَهْدِهِto his pledge

Indeed, if a close friend breaks his pledge
When a friend breaks his promise after affection,
After friendship, I am no longer one of his companions.
I do not number myself among his companions.
وإِذَاand if عَتَبْتُI reproached عَلَيْهِagainst him ثُمَّتَthen لَمْnot (past negation) يَعُدْhe turns back
عَنْfrom غَيِّهِhis waywardness لَمْnot (past negation) أَكْتَرِثْI care لعِتَابِهِabout reproaching him
And if I reproach him and he does not then turn
And if I chide him, but he does not return
From his waywardness, I do not bother to reproach him.
From his error, I do not heed his reproaches.
