رَمَيْتُI shot فَلَمْbut did not أُصِبْhit the mark وَرَمَتْand she shot فَأَصْمَتْso she killed outright
رَمَيْتُ فَلَمْ أُصِبْ وَرَمَتْ فَأَصْمَتْ
فَيَاso, O عَجَبَاًwonder لِسَهْمٍat an arrow لاdoes not يَطِيشُgo astray
فَيَا عَجَبَاً لِسَهْمٍ لا يَطِيشُ
I shot but missed; she shot and struck me dead.
I shot but missed, she shot and hit
What a wonder, then, an arrow that never goes astray!
So strange that my arrow goes astray
حَواجِبُهَاher eyebrows الْقِسِيُّthe bows وَلَحْظَتَاهاand her two glances
حَواجِبُهَا الْقِسِيُّ وَلَحْظَتَاها
بِهَاin them سَهْمَانِtwo arrows وَالأَهْدَابُand the eyelashes رِيشُfeathers
بِهَا سَهْمَانِ وَالأَهْدَابُ رِيشُ
Her eyebrows are bows, and her two glances
Her eyebrows’ frown and glance, I admit
Are two arrows in them, and her eyelashes are feathers.
