أُعَزِّيكَI console you لاnot أَنِّيbecause I أَظُنُّكَI think you جَازِعاًovercome by grief
لِخَطْبٍat a calamity وَلَكِنِّيbut I عَمَدْتُset myself لِوَاجِبِto a duty
I console you, not because I think you overcome by grief
I console you, not because I think you are grieving
At a calamity, but because I have undertaken a duty.
For some misfortune, but because it is my duty
وَكَيْفَand how أُعَزِّيI console مَنْone who فَرَىlaid bare الدَّهْرَtime خِبْرَةًthrough experience
وَأَدْرَكَand grasped مَاwhat فِيin طَيِّهِits folds مِنْof عَجَائِبِwonders
And how can I console one who has laid time bare through experience,
And how could I console one who has gained from time
And grasped the wonders within its folds?
Knowledge of the wonders that destiny brings
فَيَاso, O صَاحِبِيmy friend مَهْلاًbe calm فَلَسْتَfor you are not بِوَاجِدٍfinding
سِوَىexcept حَاضِرٍone present يَبْكِيweeps فَجِيعَةَthe tragic loss غَائِبِof one absent
So, my friend, be calm, for you will find no one
So my friend, have patience, for you will find
But one present, weeping over the tragic loss of one absent.
None but the present to mourn the departed
وَصَبْرَاًand be patient فَإِنَّfor indeed الصَّبْرَpatience أَكْرَمُthe noblest صاحِبٍcompanion
لِمَنْfor one who بَانَdeparted عَنْfrom مَثْوَاهُhis dwelling أَكْرَمَthe noblest صَاحِبِcompanion
And be patient, for patience is the noblest companion
Show forbearance, for patience is the noblest friend
For one whose noblest companion has departed his dwelling.
To one whose companion has left for the noblest abode
وَلاand do not تَأْسَgrieve مِنْat وَقْعِthe blows الْخُطُوبِof calamities وَإِنْand even if جَفَتْthey are harsh
عَلَيْكَto you فَإِنَّfor indeed النَّاسَpeople مَرْعَىthe pasture النَّوائِبِof misfortunes
And do not grieve at the blows of calamities, even if they are harsh
Do not despair if misfortunes befall you
To you, for people are the pasture of misfortunes.
For mankind are prone to reverses of fortune
إِذَاif مَاemphatic particle الرَّدَىdeath أَوْدَىdid away بِآدَمَwith Adam قَبْلَنَاbefore us
فَهَلْthen is أَحَدٌanyone مِنْof نَسْلِهِhis offspring غَيْرُnot ذَاهِبِdeparting
If death carried Adam off before us,
Since Adam's offspring in ages before us
Then is any of his offspring not bound to depart?
Have gone the way of all flesh and turned to dust
فَإِنْso if تَكُyou be قَدْalready فَارَقْتَyou parted from شَهْمَاًa gallant man مُهَذَّباًrefined
فَكُلُّthen every ابْنِson أُنْثَىwoman عُرْضَةٌvulnerable لِلْمَصَائِبِto misfortunes
So if you have parted from a gallant, refined man,
If you have lost a refined and noble soul
Then every son of woman is subject to misfortunes.
All sons of woman are subject to life's calamities
وَمَاand not مَاتَhas died مَنْone who أَبْقَاكَleft you تَهْتِفُyou call out بِاسْمِهِhis name
وَتُذْكَرُand are recounted عَنْهُof him صَالِحَاتُgood الْمَنَاقِبِvirtues
And he has not died who left you calling out his name,
Those who survive you still hail him by name
And whose noble qualities are recounted.
And tell of his virtues and excellent qualities
