كَتَمْتُI concealed الْهَوَىlove خَوْفَfor fear of إِفْشَائِهِrevealing it
كَتَمْتُ الْهَوَى خَوْفَ إِفْشَائِهِ
فَأَلْهَبَso it kindled نَارَfire الْغَضَىghada wood فِيin ضُلُوعِيmy ribs
فَأَلْهَبَ نَارَ الْغَضَى فِي ضُلُوعِي
I concealed my love for fear of revealing it;
I concealed my love fearing its disclosure
So it kindled a ghada-wood fire within my ribs.
So it ignited the fire of anguish in my ribs
فَلَمَّاthen when خَشِيتُI feared عَلَىfor مُهْجَتِيmy lifeblood
فَلَمَّا خَشِيتُ عَلَى مُهْجَتِي
أَذَعْتُI revealed الْهَوَىlove بِلِسَانِwith the tongue of الدُّمُوعِtears
أَذَعْتُ الْهَوَى بِلِسَانِ الدُّمُوعِ
Then, when I feared for my lifeblood,
When I feared for my innermost being
I revealed my love with the tongue of tears.
I proclaimed my love with the tongue of tears
