How delightful is wine in springtime,

    and the pairing of cups with blossoms;

and the ringing of strings at the break of dawn,

and the birds' warbling in their nests.

Between a sky drifting with the clouds

and an expanse flowing with the streams—

a sight that enchants the mind and polishes

the surfaces of hearts and eyes.

Indeed, the season of youth is lent to us,

and the nights reclaim all that is lent.

So roam and revel, you two, for we have been told

by the east wind's breezes to cast off the bridle.

And seize the best of spring, you two, in haste,

for hopes are bound to swift action.

It is a season when the garden's branches strut

    in an adornment of flowers,

    swaying like maidens upon whom

    are garments with pearly buttons.

The east wind's hand pinched them, and they writhed,

    dancing to the turtledoves' song.

They sipped the wine of dew from the cups of flowers,

until they swayed in drunken languor.

So awake, O drinking companion, and ask the cupbearer for a morning draught

in a cup overflowing with radiance.

And give me drink, you two, and sing me a melody

that rouses the soul from the bondage of solemnity.

For winter has indeed announced its departure,

and the advance guard of the new spring has appeared.

And the day has wheeled round, until equal

are its two scale-pans, between darkness and daylight.
