يُسَائِلُنِيhe questions me عَمَّاabout what كَتَمْتُI concealed مِنَof الْهَوَىlove
صَدِيقيmy friend وَفِيand in بَعْضِpart of الإِجَابَةِthe answer مَاsomething that يُزْرِيbrings disgrace
He asks me about the love I have concealed—
My friend questions me about the love I've hidden
my friend—and part of the answer would bring disgrace.
Yet to answer risks exposing my secret longing
فَإِنْfor if لَمْnot أَقُلْI say حَقَّاًthe truth كَذَبْتُI lied عَلَىabout الْهَوَىlove
وَإِنْand if قُلْتُI said إِنِّيthat I am عَاشِقٌa lover بُحْتُI spoke openly بِالسِّرِّof the secret
For if I do not speak the truth, I lie about love;
If I lie, I betray my heart's desire
and if I say that I am a lover, I reveal the secret.
If I admit my love, I break my vow of silence
