For a day like this, the kingdom had been waiting.
For a day like this the kingdom had long awaited,
So rejoice in it—a reign whose hallmark is victory.
So revel in it, an era whose hallmark is triumph.
تَهَلَّلَتْbeamed مِصْرُEgypt بَعْدَafter الْيَأْسِdespair وَابتَهَجَتْand rejoiced

Egypt beamed after despair; and glad were
Egypt exulted after despair and was gladdened,
The subjects because of you, till joy filled them all.
The common folk were jubilant, awash in ink.
نالَتْattained بِنَصْرِكَthrough your victory مَاwhat كَانَتْhad been تُؤَمِّلُهُhoping for it

لاmay not زِلْتَyou cease لِلْمُلْكِfor the kingdom وَالإِسْلامِand Islam تَنْتَصِرُwin victories
Through your victory they attained what they had hoped for.
With your victory you obtained what you had hoped for.
May you ever win victories for the kingdom and Islam.
Still you rise to defend the nation and Islam.
فَالْعَدْلُso justice مُنْبَسِطٌis widespread وَالْجَوْرُand oppression مُنْقَبِضٌis withdrawn

Thus justice spreads wide, and oppression shrinks;
Justice extends its reach and injustice recoils,
And safety hangs unfurled, while fear is gathered up.
Security hangs loose while fear rolls up its sleeves,
نَصْرٌa victory مِنَfrom اللَّهِGod وَافَىarrived بَعْدَafter دَاجِيَةٍa dark night

A victory from God arrived after a dark night,
An aid from God that shone after darkness,
As the predawn light shone forth from its concealment.
As daybreak reveals what night had concealed.
فَالنَّاسُso the people مِنْfrom طَرَبٍdelight فِيin نَشْوَةٍa rapture أَخَذَتْtook hold

So the people, out of delight, were in a rapture that took hold
The people are intoxicated with joy and rapture,
Of them; they swayed as though the company had become drunk.
Swaying as if the throngs are drunk.

They hasten to the caller, streaming across
Surging to the summoner, across one land they flow,
One stretch of land; another gathers them, and they form throngs.
And another gathers them in — throng upon throng.

In every gathering-place is an orator; around his pulpit
In every club an orator by his pulpit,
Stands a crowd, and through every valley people race.
A gathering, and in each valley people dart.

The ear savors what the tongue dictates to it,
The hearing relishes what the tongue dictates,
And the heart retains what the eye imparts.
And the heart clings to what sight intimates.
فَلاso no شَقَاءٌmisery وَلاand no بَأْسٌhardship وَلاand no فَزَعٌalarm

وَلاand no عَدَاءٌenmity وَلاand no غَدْرٌtreachery وَلاand no حَذَرُapprehension
So there is no misery, no hardship, no alarm,
No wretchedness, nor harm, nor alarm,
And no enmity, no treachery, no apprehension.
No enmity, nor treason, nor caution.

A festival at which the world beamed with joy,
A feast that set the world aflutter with joy,
And a blessing whose due humankind cannot repay.
A blessing whose dues no human can pay.
وَكَيْفَand how لاnot تَفْخَرُglory الدُّنْيَاthe world بِطَلْعَةِin the appearance of مَنْone who

And how could the world not glory in the appearance of one
How can the world but glory in one whose rising sun
Without whom no one in it would have a wish left?
If it fell, none would remain for man and trace?
فَاسْتَبْشِرُواso rejoice يَاO بَنِيsons of الأَوطَانِthe homelands إِنَّindeed لَكُمْfor you

So rejoice, sons of the homelands, for you have
Rejoice, O children of the nations, for you have
From his justice a garden through which a river flows.
In his justice, a haven with rivers flowing!
هُوَhe الْمَلِيكُthe sovereign الَّذِيwho لَوْلاwere it not for سِيَاسَتُهُhis governance

He is the sovereign, without whose governance
He is the king whose enlightened rule, but for which,
Justice would have neither presence nor trace.
Justice would have neither essence nor vestige.
أَفْضَىcame إِلَىto مِصْرَEgypt وَالدُّنْيَاwhile the world عَلَىin خَطَرٍperil

He came to Egypt while the world was in peril,
He came to Egypt and the world, though fraught with peril,
And no sooner had he appeared than peril fled.
And no sooner appeared than the danger recoiled.

Favored with success in doing good, an originator
Successful in doing good, inventing
Of what thought falls short of grasping.
What minds fall short of grasping.
يَهْمِيrains down نَدىًdew (bounty) وَرَدىًand death جُوداًin generosity وَمَحْمِيَةًand protective zeal

He rains down dew and death, in generosity and protective zeal;
He pours forth dew and showers, bounty and safekeeping —
Such too is Time: in it are benefit and harm.
Thus is time, with its weal and woe.
يَسْطُوhe strikes بِرِفْقٍwith gentleness إِذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle الْحَزْمُprudence أَعْوَزَهُcompels him

He strikes with gentleness when prudence compels him
He holds sway gently when wisdom fails him
To punish, and pardons when he has the power.
Toward punishment, and pardons when able.
فَالْبَطْشُfor violence مَاso long as لَمْnot يَكُنْit is عَنْfrom حِكْمَةٍwisdom سَرَفٌexcess

For violence, unless grounded in wisdom, is excess;
For might, if not wise, is but excess,
And forbearance, unless grounded in power, is weakness.
And clemency, if not from ability, but frailty.
إِذَاwhen ارْتَأَىhe deliberates بَدَرَتْflash forth أَنْوَارُthe lights of حِكْمَتِهِhis wisdom

When he deliberates, the lights of his wisdom flash forth,
When he deems fit, the gleams of his wisdom shine forth
As sparks fly after the flint is struck.
As sparks scatter after flint is struck.
دَلَّتْtestified عَلَىto فَضْلِهِhis excellence آثارُthe traces of حِكْمَتِهِhis wisdom

The traces of his wisdom bear witness to his excellence,
Traces of his wisdom reveal his merit,
And everything bears a trace of its own essence.
All things, in and of themselves, his traces show.
إِذَاwhen تَبَسَّمَhe smiles فَاضَتْoverflow رَاحَتَاهُhis two palms لَنَاfor us

When he smiles, his two palms overflow for us
When he smiles, the meadows of his pleasure bloom,
With bounty—and not every lightning flash has rain behind it.
Generous, not every lightning flash brings rain.
تَملَّenjoy long بِالْمُلكِin kingship يَاعَبَّاسُO Abbas وَابْقَand remain لَنَاfor us

Long enjoy kingship, O Abbas, and remain with us
Take hold of the kingdom, O Abbas, and remain
In bliss whose purity no murk has clouded.
In a bounty unmarred by bitterness.
فَأَنْتَfor you are مِنْfrom دَوْحَةٍa great tree فِيin الْمَجْدِglory بَاسِقَةٍtowering

For you are from a great tree towering in glory,
You are of a lofty lineage in glory,
That thrives, as its blossoms and fruit attest.
Prospering, with light and fruit made clear.
بَلَغْتُI reached مَجْهُودَthe utmost effort of نَفْسِيmyself فيin الثَّنَاءِpraise وَلَمْand have not

I have reached the limit of my powers in praise, yet have not
I have strained my soul in praise, but cannot attain
Reached your heights—and how could the moon be reached?
Your sublimity — how can the moon be grasped?
فَامْنُنْso bestow favor عَلَيَّupon me بِإِصغَاءٍby listening إِلَىto كَلِمٍwords

So favor me by listening to words
So grace me by heeding some words
Counted as speech, though they are pearls.
That, though poor in speech, are pearls.
وَسَمْتُهَاI marked them بِاسْمِكَwith your name الْعَالِيexalted فَأَلْبَسَهَاso it clothed them

I marked them with your exalted name, which clothed them
I gave them your noble name — a raiment
In beauty in which the world glories and takes pride.
That lent the world beauty and pride.
إِذَاwhen تَلاهَاrecites them لِسَانُthe tongue of الشُّكْرِgratitude قَامَrose لَهَاfor them

When gratitude's tongue recites them, there rise in their honor
When the tongue of thanks intones them, cities arise
Out of love at the mention of your heights, nomads and townsfolk.
And tribes stand alert out of love for you.
لاmay not زِلْتَyou cease to be مَوْرِدَa watering-place of آمَالٍhopes تَحُومُhover بِهِaround it

May you ever remain a watering-place of hopes, around which hover
Still you are the hope to which hearts
The birds of hearts, until the forms are raised again.
Soar until the Trumpet is blown.
