And many a haughty man on the crests of a lofty, towering mountain,

who knows no honesty, whether he befriends or bears enmity,

whom people visit if a breeze so much as brushes him,

yet who never compassionately visits those who visited him—

    فَإِنْ قَضَى وَطَراً مِنْ غَدْرَةٍ عَادَا

    Time never rests from the wrong it pursues;

and when it has satisfied a desire through treachery, it returns,

striking at this one and shooting at that one at random,

like a hunter tracking two game animals as he pursues them in turn—

Time destroyed him, against his will, amid his family,

as it destroyed ʿĀd with a bitter, howling wind.

So know your God, and beware of spending the night in

sin; and do not make oppressing humankind a habit.
