    After sixty, have I desires still to pursue?

    Far from it! A man has no desires after youth.

    لا يَسْتَقِيمُ لَهُ قَصْدٌ وَمِنْهَاجُ

    Indeed, the son of Adam is in peril in this world;

    No course or path stays straight for him.

    As though he were aboard a ship, surrounded

    On either side by whirlwinds and waves.

    He longs to live on, though hateful death hangs over him,

    And seeks strength in security fraught with alarm.

    سِيَّان عِنْدِي صَفَّارٌ وَشَحَّاجُ

    I pay the birds no heed, whether they sing or caw;

    A whistling bird and a cawing crow are alike to me.

    They deem al-Hajjaj's ferocity monstrous,

    Yet every people has its own Hajjaj to oppress them.
