    فَالْحُكْمُ لِلسَّيْفِ إِنْ لَمْ تَصْدَعِ الْكَلِمُ

    In the sword's hilt, if accord proves elusive, lies an arbiter;

    So judgment belongs to the sword if words fail to settle matters.

    أَطَاعَهَا الْمُرْهَفَانِ السَّيْفُ وَالْقَلَمُ

    A free soul will not let me suffer wrong, nor will a hand

    Obeyed by the two keen instruments, the sword and pen;

    بِهَا عَلَى الدَّهْرِ عَضْباً لَيْسَ يَنْثَلِمُ

    Nor a resolve roused by a lofty aspiration that has drawn

    With it, against Time, a keen blade that cannot be notched;

    Nor young men like forest lions, who have no

    Thickets but spears when battle reddens.

    وَالْغَيْثِ إِنْ رَحِمُوا وَالسَّيْلِ إِنْ هَجَمُوا

    Like lightning when they resolve, and thunder when they clash;

    And rain when they show mercy, and a torrent when they attack.

    أَوْ خَاصَمُوا فِئَةً فِي مَحْفِلٍ خصمُوا

    If they battle a people amid a vast host, they prevail;

    Or if they dispute with a faction in an assembly, they win the argument.

    They do not fear that death should descend upon them,

    As though meeting death were, to them, a sanctuary.

    At ease and handsome in their assemblies,

    And in war, when you meet them, formidable warriors.

    Each a radiant man, his brow like a dinar,

    From him a blazing star dispels the terrors of battle.

    They do not cling to the world and its adornments

    When they become aware of humiliation or feel indignation.

    Hatred of oppression has made death dear to a band of men,

    Without whom blessings would not endure in the world.

    They died with honor and left a legacy of glory,

    Through which nations attained the honor of freedom.

    How, then, can a young man consent to bear humiliation,

    While slaves and servants disdain humiliation?

    If a young man has neither merit nor a sense of honor,

    Then his presence among his people is as nothing.

    Thus forbearance, unless born of strength, is weakness,

    And patience that does not serve glory brings regret.

    فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَ اطِّرَاحِ الذُّلِّ مَا يَصِمُ

    So hold yourself above a state in which you are oppressed;

    For once humiliation is cast off, nothing can disgrace you.

    مَنْ أَخْطَأَتْهُ الرَّزَايَا غَالَهُ الْهَرَمُ

    And do not fear death's watering-place, for you must reach it;

    Whomever calamities miss, old age strikes down.

    Indeed, glory is a legacy whose remembrance keeps alive

    The names of people whose ancestral honors the ages have folded away.
