A heart enamored of the moons behind the curtains,

    and an eye that weeps in the wake of parting;

and longing like a sword’s blade—were I to bare its edge

against a champion, the helmeted man would be cleft by it.

I strive to conceal my passion, yet it is betrayed

by streams of tears pouring from my wounded eye.

And love is nothing but a Babylonian breath of enchantment:

solid rock almost splits apart at its touch.

My two friends, is there solace after passionate longing?

And can youth that passed yesterday ever return?

I pass the night, now giving my soul hope, and it grows calm,

and now reciting despair to it, and it grows distraught.

And recalling the bloom of youth is nothing but regret,

before which the proud man’s soul is humbled and submits.

So may God show no mercy to gray hair and its season,

even though all sound judgment lies within it.

The day of gray hair saddened me, though it was white,

and the night of youth gladdened me, though it was dark.

When a man’s head turns gray, his heart turns gray,

and no room for cheerfulness remains within it.

And what joy is there in gray hair, when in its wake come

cares that make the heart quake whenever they pass over it?

    وَقَلَّ لَهُ مِنِّي نَجِيعٌ وَأَدْمُعُ

    Let my heart and my eye both weep for youth;

and blood and tears from me are all too little for it.

A time gone by, save for the traces of a memory—

whenever it comes to mind, the soul is almost torn away by it.
