Proclaim his death, O humankind and jinn,

for the arrows of fate have struck him dead.

He has gone, and we remain after him in mourning,

mourning excellence, weeping for him with blood of deepest red.

No eye but overflows with tears,

    and no heart but throbs,

out of loyalty and tender concern for one departed,

whose dwellings and familiar haunts stand empty of his presence.

We miss him as the thirsty miss their drink,

in a trackless desert, with the watering place far away.

Alas for glory! How its sacred honor has been violated!

And for excellence, when it is hurled from brink to brink!

By my life, after his loss sorrow has stirred

in us a burning anguish no rein can curb.

    وَمَا خَيْرُ قَلْبٍ لا يَفِي بِضَمَانِ

    Keeping faith with him is a pledge upon my heart;

and what good is a heart that will not honor a pledge?

He left the world behind, but left enduring deeds

    whose excellence every tongue acknowledges.

Though he has perished, he lives through his excellence,

and he who is remembered does not pass away.

And what man can endure, when barring his survival

are day and night, both arriving with death?

Ah, may God curse life, for it is

nearer to death than a mouth is to fingertips.

Whenever Time builds us up, its vicissitudes keep

tearing us down; Time is the most treacherous builder.

The world beguiles us, so we play, never imagining

that death is inevitable for all that lives.

If the first father has gone his way,

then his sons have no power to live on.

Indeed, Umm Dafr, the foul world, has unwittingly bereaved us

of a splendid, pure-born man of the Prophet's line.

Pure in every recess of his heart, he was never stirred

by any urge toward hatred and rancor.

He treated others kindly; if troubled, he would not utter

any ill, nor would his lips so much as hint at it.

He was indeed a close friend unstained by betrayal,

a companion blameless in absence and in presence.

    وَيَا رُبَّ قَوْلٍ نَافِذٍ كَسِنَانِ

    When he spoke, his words were a token of his deeds;

and oh, how many a word pierced like a spearhead!

Virtues from which musk wafts, telling their tale,

and day and night extol the traces they have left.

No wonder, then, that eyes bleed in sorrow

for you, and grief feeds upon every heart.

For you are the son of one who revived the lands with his knowledge

and left his name remembered in every place.

He gave the sons of the homelands excellence through which they rose

to plateaus and peaks in the heights of glory.

And you are his son; the branch follows its root,

and each of you is a noble racing steed.

He is first, the frontrunner in every race,

and you alone, of all creation, are second to him.

O mercy of God, rain down upon them both

    with two brimming buckets of divine favor pouring down;

and encompass the graves of all humanity, in honor

of two graves that meet in al-Batha.

God's peace be upon you—a greeting from me,

which the two angels bring you in eternity.
