O heart, what ails you that you do not awaken

from passion? O heart, what ails you?

And has it not occurred to you to turn

away from youthful folly? Has it not occurred to you?

Or did you suppose that the hand of time

is too short to reach you?

Far from it! Passion has turned you aside

from returning—and I do not think you will.

    Entrust your affairs to Him

who created you from nothing and sustained you.

And abandon clinging to the impossible,

for it wears away your strength.

Then perhaps you will wrest from the hand

of passions, O my heart, your reins.
