قَدْindeed عَاقَنِيhas hindered me الشَّكُّdoubt فِيin أَمْرٍa matter أَضَعْتُI lost لَهُfor it
عَزِيمَةَfirmness الرَّأْيِof judgment حَتَّىuntil ضَاقَbecame constrained كِتْمَانِيmy concealment
Doubt has held me back in a matter over which I lost
Doubt has estranged me regarding an affair I had resolved
my firmness of judgment, until I could bear concealment no longer.
Until concealing it became too constricting for me
أَوْلَيْتَنِيyou bestowed on me مِنْكَfrom you وُدّاًaffection قَبْلَbefore مَعْرِفَةٍacquaintance
ثُمَّthen انْثَنَيْتَyou turned away بِصَدٍّwith rejection قَبْلَbefore إِعْلانِa declaration
You bestowed your affection on me before knowing me,
You showed me affection before getting to know me
then turned away in rejection before any declaration.
Then you turned coldly before making it public
فَسَرَّنِيso it delighted me مِنْكَfrom you مَاwhat قَدَّمْتَyou offered مُبْتَدَأًat the outset
وَسَاءَنِيand it distressed me مِنْكَfrom you مَاwhat أَخَّرْتَyou deferred فِيin الثَّانِيthe second
So what you offered at first delighted me,
What you started with pleased me
and what you reserved for later distressed me.
What you ended with pained me in the second
فَإِنْso if يَكُنْit is سُوءُbadness رَأْيٍof opinion أَوْor مَلالُweariness هَوَىًof love
فَإِنَّthen indeed كِلْتَيْهِمَاboth of them فِيin الْقُبْحِugliness سَيَّانِequal
So if it is an ill opinion or weariness of love,
If it was bad judgement or boredom with passion
then both are equal in ugliness.
Then both in their ugliness are the same
فَاكْشِفْso lift لَنَاfor us عَنْfrom قِنَاعِthe veil الشَّكِّof doubt نَحْيَthat we may live بِهِby it
إِمَّاeither وِصَالاًunion وَإِمَّاor else مَحْضَsheer هِجْرَانِestrangement
So lift for us the veil of doubt, that we may live accordingly:
So uncover for us from behind the mask of doubt with it
either in union or in utter estrangement.
Either union or outright abandonment
