لاdo not تَبْهَتِslander الشَّيْطَانَSatan فِيconcerning فِعْلِهِhis deeds
فَقَدْfor indeed كَفَىit suffices أَنَّكَthat you are مِنْamong حِزْبِهِhis party
Do not slander Satan for his deeds,
Do not be fooled by the devil and his acts
For it is enough that you belong to his party.
It is enough that you are of his party
فَاخْسَأْso begone فَمَاfor not الْخِنْزِيرُthe pig فِيamong نَوْعِهِits kind
أَخَسَّbaser طَبْعاًby nature مِنْكَthan you فِيin كَسْبِهِits deeds
So begone: the pig, among its kind,
So be base, for the pig is not in its kind
Is no baser than you in nature or in its deeds.
More base in nature than you in its earnings
لَوْif لَمْnot تَكُنْyou were فِيin الدَّهْرِthe age مُسْتَوْزَراًappointed a minister
مَاnot سَارَعَhastened النَّاسُthe people إِلىto سَبِّهِcursing it
Had you not been appointed a minister in this age,
Had you not been so heavily burdened in this world
People would not have hastened to curse it.
People would not have rushed to insult you
ذَاكَthat one الَّذِيwho لَوْلاwere it not for خُمُولُapathy الْوَرَىhumankind
مَاnot نامَhe slept مِنْout of أَمْنٍsecurity عَلَىon جَنْبِهِhis side
That is the one who, but for humankind's apathy,
That one, had the people not been so lethargic
Would not have slept securely on his side.
Would not have slept in such confidence by his side
يَفْعَلُhe commits بِالنَّاسِagainst people أَفَاعِيلَهُhis misdeeds
وَلاand not يَخَافُhe fears اللهGod مِنْbecause of ذَنْبِهِhis sin
He perpetrates his misdeeds against people,
He does to people his evil deeds
And does not fear God because of his sin.
And does not fear God for his sins
فَالْخَيْرُfor goodness وَالنِّعْمَةُand blessing فِيin بُعْدِهِhis remoteness
والشَرُّand evil وَالنِقْمَةُand affliction فِيin قُرْبِهِhis nearness
For goodness and blessing lie in distance from him,
So goodness and grace are in his absence
And evil and affliction in nearness to him.
While evil and wrath are in his presence
أَشَدُّthe most extreme خَلْقِcreatures of اللهِGod كِبْراًin arrogance فَإِنْyet if
فَاجَأْتَهُyou surprised him كَرَّhe turned back عَلَىon عَقْبِهِhis heel
The most arrogant of God's creatures; yet if
The proudest of God's creations, so if
You surprise him, he turns back on his heel.
You oppose him, he turns back on his heel
هَجَوْتُهُI lampooned him لاnot بَالِغَاًreaching لُؤْمَهُhis baseness
لَكِنَّنِيbut I كَفْكَفْتُI curbed مِنْsome of غَرْبِهِhis sharp edge
I lampooned him without reaching the full extent of his baseness,
I disparaged him, not to achieve his demise
But I blunted his edge a little.
But to restrain myself from his harm
فَإِنْso if أَكُنْI am قَدْalready نِلْتُI detracted مِنْfrom عِرْضِهِhis honor
فَإِنَّنِيthen indeed I دَنَّسْتُI sullied شِعْرِيmy poetry بِهِwith him
So if I have assailed his honor,
If I have attained some of his honor
Then I have sullied my poetry with him.
Then I have sullied my poetry with him
فَلاso let him not يَلُومَنَّblame سِوَىother than نَفْسِهِhimself
مَنْwhoever سَلَّطَgave power to النَّاسَthe people عَلَىto ثَلْبِهِreviling him
So let him blame none but himself—
So let no one blame but himself
Whoever has given people power to revile him.
Who unleashed people upon his worn-out coat
