لا تَعْكُفَنَّ عَلَى الْمُدَامِ بِغَيْرِ مَا
صَوْتٍa voice يَهِيجُstirs بِلَحْنِهِwith its melody النَّدْمَانَاthe drinking companion
صَوْتٍ يَهِيجُ بِلَحْنِهِ النَّدْمَانَا
Do not linger over wine without
Do not dwell too long on wine
a voice whose melody stirs the drinking companion.
Without the strains that gently stir remorse;
إِنَّindeed الْغِنَاءَsinging سَرِيرَةٌa secret فِيin النَّفْسِthe soul قَدْhas (perfect marker)
إِنَّ الْغِنَاءَ سَرِيرَةٌ فِي النَّفْسِ قَدْ
ضَاقَتْgrew too cramped بِهَاfor it فَتَفَجَّرَتْand so it burst forth أَلْحَانَاas melodies
ضَاقَتْ بِهَا فَتَفَجَّرَتْ أَلْحَانَا
Indeed, singing is a secret within the soul, which has
