    Pass round the cups of wine, you two; dawn has shone forth.

    And the birds have called to us: “Drunkenness is now due.”

    Do you two not see the night, how

    Its stars have slipped westward and the Eagle has descended?

    فَإِنِّي أَرَى مَا لَيْسَ يَبْلُغُهُ الذُّكْرُ

    So rise, you two, and see what morning does to darkness;

    For I see what no description can encompass.

    كِلا الْفَرَسَيْنِ اغْتَالَ شَأْوَهُمَا الْحُضْرُ

    I see a black steed followed by a pursuing gray;

    Both steeds—their gallop has devoured their course.

    The birds have crooned within their nests,

    And the blossom stands on its stalk to greet us.

    And morning finds the ponds polished by the east wind,

    While rain embroiders both their flanks with its pearls.

    They shimmer as sheets of silver shimmer,

    Upon them lies raw gold from the midmorning sun's glitter.

    Flocks scurry round the water, calling loudly,

    With a melody that leaves its mark on every ear.

    When the hawk screeches, they crouch against the earth

    From terror, until not a chirp of theirs can be heard.

    They watch him furtively until, when his shadow vanishes

    From the water, song returns and cooing spreads.

    يُقَرِّبُهَا ظِمْءٌ وَيُبْعِدُها ذُعْرُ

    You see them in flocks, circling above the water;

    Thirst draws them near, and fear drives them away.

    They go at dusk and dawn among the boughs of a great tree,

    Watered by a copious, pouring cloud of autumn rain.

    Toward the horizon's reaches it turns like a proud man,

    Pride showing at the tip of his nose.

    Playgrounds of pleasure beyond the eye's full reach,

    And a world of bliss that thought cannot encompass.

    فَفِي مِثْلِ هَذَا الْيَوْمِ طَابَتْ لَنَا الْخَمْرُ

    So, my two companions in confidence, rise to drink it;

    For wine is sweet to us on such a day as this.

    Devote yourselves to wine; for life and youth—

    If wine does not guard them, life goes to waste.

    A people's hidden treasure, which they left to others,

    Days have passed it by, and the age has changed.

    إِذَا اتَّقَدَتْ فِي الْكَأْسِ سَارَ بِهَا السَّفْرُ

    It has emerged shining like the lamp of heaven;

    When it blazes in the cup, travelers journey by its glow.

    أَنَاشِيدَ يَهْفُو دُونَ تَسْمَاعِهَا الصَّبْرُ

    And if you two sing to me, let there be

    Songs before whose sound patience falters;

    Songs in which, for the lovely woman and for love,

    Are pleas born of circumstances that would soften stone.

    Perhaps her love will return as it first appeared,

    Soft along its edges, before estrangement took hold.

    A supple beauty among the fair, swaying in the evenings,

    Unblemished in what fastenings and waist-wraps conceal.

    When she unveils, with the full moon on its fullest night,

    And both shine alike, people ask, “Which is the full moon?”

    Hers is the turn of a soft-voiced fawn, and a glance

    That even a first surprise assault cannot rival.

    It turns sound souls sick,

    And does what bright swords and brown spears cannot.

    I lowered before her my two wings of affection,

    And yielded to her eyes, as fate decreed.

    Although between me and her husband

    Are grievous blows whose vengeance never sleeps.

    فَبِالْغَادَةِ الْحَسْنَاءِ لا يَحْسُنُ الْغَدْرُ

    So, lady of the anklet, be gentle with my lifeblood;

    For treachery does not become a graceful beauty.

    And spare my heart; for if it held

    Nothing but love for Abd Allah, it would have an excuse.

    My brother and my friend, the son of my affection and my companion,

    And the repository of my secret when my breast is in turmoil.

    وَمَا خَيْرُ وُدٍّ لَيْسَ يَلْحَقُهُ شُكْرُ

    He is the friend whose efforts in affection deserve thanks;

    What good is affection that meets with no gratitude?

    Trustworthy with a friend's secrets, when

    Others' pledges weaken or are touched by languor.

    His open speech is no secret, nor is the secret in his breast,

    When a slanderer probes his thoughts, made public.

    He creeps toward the hidden meaning with a thought

    For which, in this, smooth and rugged ground are alike.

    His is a radiant dawn whose light travels

    When understanding's horizon clouds and the matter grows obscure.

    فَلَوْ غَضَّ مِنْ صَوْتٍ لَكَانَ لَهَا هَدْرُ

    Throngs of words jostle in his breast;

    Even were he to lower his voice, they would still roar.

    He has a pen; were it not for his thought's abundance,

    The clouds would dry up beside him, or the sea run out.

    When the crown of his head veils itself in night,

    Dawn bursts from the tips of its locks.

    To you, son of eloquence's broad plain, they prance,

    With a caravan of meanings, unchecked by rebuke:

    Young she-camels that do not graze on distant pasture,

    Nor race for water if their ten-day watering is missed.

    It is nothing but poetry: its baggage sacks have set out,

    And in their folds lies fragrance from their sweet contents.

    So lend it your ear; it will tell you that

    It is poetry—not what the ignorant crowd lays claim to.

    It grows in beauty with recitation, as though I

    Had breathed a spell into it, though no magic is in it.

    Live on for glory, knowledge, forbearance, and piety,

    And the fulfillment of hopes, as long as the fresh bough puts forth leaves.
