    فَالْحُكْمُ فِي الدَّهْرِ مَنْسُوبٌ إِلَى الْقَلَمِ

    Through the power of knowledge, the might of nations grows;

for rule throughout the ages is ascribed to the pen.

How vast the gulf between the clotted blood that swords spew

and the wisdom that pens breathe forth!

If people acted justly, distinction among them would be

through a drop of ink, not through the shedding of blood.

Devote yourself to knowledge: you will attain a station's height

in excellence, surrounded by honor and nobility.

For none gathers the ripe fruits of success

from knowledge's garden except one sincere in resolve.

Were there nothing in endeavors to reveal

men's preeminence, all people would be equal in worth.

A young man has his allotted time; should it pass,

its hours spent in vain, he cannot escape regret.

Were it not for the exchange of ideas, there would not appear

the earth's treasures, between plain and mountain.

How many a nation's bodily forms have vanished, yet still roam

its spirits among us in the realm of words!

Look at the two pyramids standing before you: you will find

wonders the soul does not see in dreams.

Two edifices: the spheres, since first they moved, have never circled

above their equal in form and grandeur.

They enshrined wisdom whose sources have perished,

yet it remains, inscribed upon piled stones.

    وَذِكْرُهُمْ لَمْ يَزَلْ حَيّاً عَلَى الْقِدَمِ

    A people whom the hand of days folded away, so they perished;

yet their memory has remained alive despite its age.

How many images upon them almost speak to us

aloud, without a speaking tongue or mouth,

reciting Hermes' verses, which attest to

far-reaching excellence and glory of lofty standing.

Verses of pride: their light shone forth, and they became

renowned in the tongues of Arabs and non-Arabs.

And between them Balhib appeared, facing

east, watching the Nile's course from nearby.

As though crouching to spring, awaiting

prey, he watches it and has not slept.

A symbol showing that, when the sciences

spread through Egypt, she springs from the hollow of nothingness.

Awaken, then, sons of the homelands, and take your stand

for knowledge, for it is the pivot of justice among nations.

And do not deem increasing wealth [a distinction]; affiliate yourselves [with learning],

for knowledge is the best thing a living soul can possess.

For many a wealthy man is despised for ignorance,

and many a man in poverty is respected for knowledge.

Build schools: they are the planting; if it grows tall,

its branches bear fresh blessings as fruit.

An abode of learning, where you see the children intent

upon their lessons there, like birds within the sanctuary.

Each mature in mind, though only ten years old,

his speech all but pouring forth wisdom.

As though they were a firmament where blazing stars shone,

whose brilliance leaves no need for the stars of darkness.

They gather from every science a flower, fragrant

with a breath that restores souls to crumbling bones.

How many an eloquent poet you see among them,

    or a perceptive writer, or a discerning mathematician;

and a gifted man who there gained from the study of law

    a distinction that clothed him in a judge's robe of honor;

and an ocean of engineering, through whose wisdom flow

water channels through the loose earth of hills.

Indeed, how many an orator has healed a soul with counsel,

and how many a physician has healed a body of sickness!

They are schooled in the manners of kings, so you will not

meet among them any but men of high standing and dignity.

A people through whom the world is set right when it turns corrupt,

and justice keeps the wolf apart from the sheep.

And how can the pillar of justice stand firm in a land

where no banner of knowledge has been raised?

God did not fashion hearts for bodies

except to exalt the people of diligence and understanding.

And happiest of people is he who reaches a height

in excellence, distinguished by lofty qualities.

Without virtue, no man of letters would have enduring

remembrance through time, after death and extinction.

So let each person consider what his hand has sent ahead,

before the Resurrection, for life does not endure.
