Is there folly in a man's youthful dalliance?

Or does merriment disgrace a noble young man?

    فَفِيمَ هَذَا الْخِصَامُ وَاللَّدَدُ

    Each is driven toward what was intended for him;

so why this wrangling and obstinate dispute?

If there were no difference in temperaments,

no child would depart from his father's nature.

And were men alike in character,

this discord and anger would vanish.

And people are diverse, though they are united

in one man, before whom there was no one.

So one goes astray, immersed in error,

and another is devout, striving for righteousness.

And what blame falls on a man who seeks

amusement while the robes of his life are new?

Each stage of life, in old age or youth,

has its course, with an end after an allotted span.

So strive for what you wish, without delay,

for one who lingers will never attain perfection.

But for its nightly journey, the full moon would not shine, nor

would a sleek-coated steed reach the finish of a wagered race.

And let no envious man's reproach trouble you,

for envy is the way of those who harbor enmity.

Were a man to fear every reproach,

he would lose sound judgment and right guidance.

And were we to heed every critic—

for everything in this world is criticized.

And take your pleasure as you wish, before regret comes,

    when hardship and grief abound.

For beyond youth there is nothing to wish for,

and beyond gray hair, nothing to seek.
