Zalum has deserted me, and her desertion binds me to sorrow.

When, then, will she favor the love-stricken with a meeting?

She was alarmed by the first gray hairs, not knowing

that gray hair is the blaze of the fires of heartache.

    وَمِنَ الْوُعُودِ خِلابَةٌ ما تُقْتَضَى

    And she delayed her promise to you, after long guaranteeing it;

and some promises are beguilement, never fulfilled.

Would that youth returned to us with all its sweetness!

And from the lips comes the plea for a lifetime already past.

And gray hair is the finest companion, if only it

would remain—but there is no path to permanence.

And time is the thoroughfare of calamities: whoever lives

grows old, and whoever grows old is ravaged by decay.

So turn yourself away from the pursuit of youth,

and return to your good sense, for all things reach an end.

Today it is time for a racer to follow

the course of the race, and for a sheathed blade to be drawn.

Indeed, I mounted the back of a black steed; were there to race

along its course a lightning bolt, it would stumble or fall.

He folds the distance like a scroll and finds his way

through every trackless wilderness where sandgrouse lose their way.

He runs at speed, never complaining of sore hooves

all day long, nor tiring of night travel.

His gait is neither a brisk stride nor a trot, nor is he seen

walking sideways or moving with a slow, swaying gait.

Well watered, his ribs full, yet he

complains in his panting breath of a blaze within.

He kept taking, on the journey, paths

that left fine steeds fettered by aching hooves,

until I reached a spacious tract,

lush with plants, its moist soil reaching deep.

There the eye roams freely among plantings

whose beds are fertile, and well-watered gardens.

Its gardens' branches intertwine; were there to pass

through them the scorching wind, it would resemble the east breeze.

For its dust is the breath of perfume, and its vegetation

is silken cloth, and its water the radiance of morning.

So when you breathe its scent, you find the sweetest fragrance,

and when you turn, you see the fairest sight.

And the cotton, some in boll and some in bloom,

is like a graceful maiden adorned with many kinds of jewels.

Its forming bolls seem balls of emerald,

and its blossoms are like stars in their beauty.

The spirit of life has stirred within it; if ever

the channels' fetters loosened from it, it would walk.

For its dark roots swim through the moist earth,

and its green branches play in the air.

The gaze never roamed through it along the path of a thought

of limited scope without returning with wishes.

This, by your father's life, brings contentment,

and a safe outcome, and the key to wealth.

Why, then, should I toil in pursuits, expending

my life, when this is the ultimate goal of all pursuits?

Praise, then, be to God, who bestowed eminence

and lifted harm from me, so I beheld guidance.
