مَآرِبُdesires كَانَتْwere عِلّةًa cause لِلْمَظَالِمِof injustices
When will life's span end, and with it end
The desires that have been a cause of injustice?

The souls of humankind are alike in evil; so seek refuge
With the Lord of all creatures from the ignorant and the learned.

And had they known what they denied, they would surely have been certain
That this world's bliss is a dreamer's delusion.

On the earth's pages anything but traces?

وَلَمْand did not يَدْرِknow أَنَّthat الطَّبَّthe physician لَيْسَis not بِسَالِمِsafe
The sick man among the people thinks his cure lies in medicine,
And does not know that the physician himself is not safe.

So fly to al-Suha, or else take yourself a ladder
To climb to its towers by ladders.
وَكَيْفَand how تَنَالُattains النَّفْسُthe soul فِيin الدَّهْرِthis world عِيشَةًa life

And how can the soul attain in this world a life
It delights in, while Time makes no peace?
