جَاوَزْتَyou exceeded فِيin اللَّوْمِreproach حَدَّthe limit of الْقَصْدِmoderation فَاتَّئِدِso go gently
فَلَسْتَfor you are not أَشْفَقَmore concerned مِنْthan نَفْسِيmy own self عَلَىfor كَبِدِيmy liver
You have exceeded the bounds of moderation in reproach, so go gently.
For you care no more for my liver than I do myself.
دَعْنِيleave me مِنَfrom اللَّوْمِreproach إِنْif كُنْتَyou are امْرَأًa man فَطِناًdiscerning
فَاللَّوْمُfor reproach فيin الْحُبِّlove مَعْدُودٌcounted مِنَamong الْحَسَدِenvy
Spare me reproach, if you are a discerning man;
For reproach in love is reckoned a kind of envy.
إِنِّيindeed I لأَرضَىam indeed content بِمَاwith what فيin الْحُبِّlove مِنْof أَلَمٍpain
وَلَسْتُand I am not أَرْضَىcontent بِمَاwith what فيin الْقَوْلِspeech مِنْof فَنَدِfolly
I am indeed content with the pain found in love,
But I am not content with the folly found in speech.
لَوْif كَانَthere were لِلْمَرْءِfor a man عَقْلٌreason يَسْتَدِلُّhe discerns بِهِby it
عَلَىto الْحَقِيقَةِthe truth لَمْwould not يَعْتُبْfind fault عَلَىwith أَحَدِanyone
If a man had reason with which to discern
The truth, he would find fault with no one.
إِنْif كُنْتَyou are ذَاpossessed of إِمْرَةٍauthority فَانْهَthen banish الصَّبَابَةَpassionate longing عَنْfrom
قَلْبِيmy heart لِتَغْنَمَso you may win شُكْرِيmy thanks آخِرَuntil the end of الأَبَدِeternity
If you wield authority, then banish passionate longing from
My heart, to win my thanks until eternity's end.
أَوْor لاnot فَدَعْنِيthen leave me وَلاand do not تَعْنُفْbe harsh عَلَيَّwith me فَمَاfor neither
أَمْرِيmy affairs إِليَّup to me وَلاnor حُكْمُthe rule of الْهَوَىlove بِيَدِيin my hand
Or else leave me, and do not be harsh with me, for neither
Are my affairs mine to command, nor is love's rule in my hand.
إِنَّindeed الْفَتَاةَthe maiden الَّتِيwhom هَامَbecame infatuated الْفُؤَادُthe heart بِهَاwith her
أَخْفَتْshe hid عَلَيَّfrom me سَبِيلَthe path of الْحَزْمِprudence والسَّدَدِand sound judgment
Indeed, the maiden with whom my heart is madly in love
Has hidden from me the path of prudence and sound judgment.
أَغْضَبْتُI angered فيin حُبِّهاloving her أَهْلِيmy family فَمَاand not بَرِحُواthey ceased
إِلْباًunited in hostility عَلَيَّagainst me وَكَانُواand they were لِيfor me مِنَamong الْعُدَدِresources
I angered my family through loving her, and they have remained
United against me, though once they were my support.
قَالُواthey said تَعَلَّقْattach yourself بِأُخْرَىto another woman كَيْso that تَذُودَyou may drive away بِهَاthrough her
بَرْحَthe torment of الأَسَىgrief عَنْfrom فُؤَادٍa heart دَائِمِconstant in الْكَمَدِsorrow
They said, 'Love another, so that through her you may drive
The torment of grief from a heart in ceaseless sorrow.'
فَقُلْتُso I said هَيْهَاتَfar be it أَنْto أَبْغِيI seek بِهَاfor her بَدَلاًa replacement
لَمْdid not يَخْلُقِcreate اللهُGod مِنْany (emphatic) قَلْبَيْنِtwo hearts فِيin جَسَدِa body
So I said, 'Far be it from me to seek a replacement for her;
God did not create two hearts in one body.'
