لَعَمْرِيBy my life لَقَدْindeed أَيْقَظْتُI awakened مَنْwhoever كَانَwas رَاقِدَاًasleep
وَأَنْذَرْتُand I warned لَكِنْbut لَمْdid not تَكُنْbe تَنْفَعُavail النُّذْرُthe warnings
By my life, I have indeed awakened those who were asleep,
And I warned, but the warnings were of no avail.
نَصَحْتُI gave counsel فَكَذَّبْتُمْbut you disbelieved فَلَمَّاthen when أَتَّىcame الرَّدَىruin
عَمَدْتُمْyou turned لِتَصْدِيقِيto believing me وَقَدْand already قُضِيَwas settled الأَمْرُthe matter
I gave counsel, but you disbelieved; then, when ruin came,
You turned to believing me, though the matter was already settled.
فَلَمْso did not يَبْقَremain فِيin أَيْدِيكُمُyour hands غَيْرُother than حَسْرَةٍregret
وَلَمْand did not يَبْقَremain عِنْدِيwith me غَيْرُother than مَاwhat عَافَهُspurned it الصَّدْرُthe breast
So nothing remained in your hands but regret,
And nothing remained with me but what the breast had spurned.
فَجَاءَthen came الَّذِيthat which كُنْتُمْyou were تَخَافُونَyou fear شَرَّهُits evil
وَزَالَand vanished الَّذِيthat which لَمْdid not يَبْقَremain مِنْfrom بَعْدِهِafter it شِعْرُpoetry
Then came that whose evil you had feared,
And gone was that after which no poetry remained.
