Who will help an eye whose pupil does not sleep,

and a heart that passion has destroyed?

I pass the night amid sorrow and tears,

and sleeplessness, while others sleep, heedless of me.

No friend pities what I spent the night enduring,

nor any comforter—where, then, are the noble?

The searing ache of longing has left nothing of me

but a soul whose nourishment is pain.

The breeze grew tender in compassion for my plight,

and the doves wept in pity for me.

And I would ransom with my life—if I possessed my life—

a moon whose light is darkness to me.

In him, hearts find calamities sweet,

and bodies relish wasting sickness because of him.

An idol around whom hearts hover—

so behold how idols are worshipped!

Slanderers changed him, and he turned away from me,

and he is far from me, on an unreachable height.

They claimed I had committed a sin, yet I bear—

God knows—no guilt in loving him.

Every person will face what he has done,

and to God judgments are returned.

O my two boon companions, console me, for never shall perish

a soul that boon companions have consoled.

    Many a word allays a heart's anguish,

and many an utterance dries wounds.

And among people is one you deem sound,

yet he is a disease that sickens minds.

Indeed, by my life, I have tested my age, yet have not

admired in it what other people praise.

Empty boasting that does not quench a thirsty one's thirst,

and pastures whose dry stubble no one looks at.

I seek sincerity in affection—but how

can affection be true when pledges are decayed bones?

Whenever I said, 'I have found a close friend,'

the days made me laugh at his treachery.

So stand alone; you will live free on your own.

Many a lone man is feared by a vast army.

And beware lest oppression touch you, for

oppression is a death from which Death itself flees.

Some people went astray, mistaking patience for forbearance,

though, except in battle, it is a disgrace.

They think life in humiliation is living,

yet it is a death in which the ignoble live.
