وِصَالُكَyour union لِيto me هَجْرٌestrangement وَهَجْرُكَand your estrangement لِيto me وَصْلُunion
فَزِدْنِيso give me more صُدُوداًshunning مَاas much as اسْتَطَعْتَyou can وَلاand do not تَأْلُslacken
Your union with me is estrangement, and your estrangement from me is union.
So shun me as much as you can, and spare no effort.
إِذَاif كَانَis قُرْبِيmy nearness مِنْكَto you بُعْدَاًdistance عَنِfrom الْمُنَىcherished hopes
فَلاthen may not حُمَّتِbe ordained اللُّقْيَاthe meeting وَلاand may not اجْتَمَعَbe reunited الشَّمْلُthe company
If my nearness to you means distance from my hopes,
Then may no meeting be ordained, nor any reunion come to pass.
وَكَيْفَand how أَوَدُّI desire الْقُرْبَnearness مِنْto مُتَلَوِّنٍa fickle person
كَثِيرِmany خَبَايَاsecrets الصَّدْرِof the breast شِيمَتُهُhis nature الْخَتْلُdeceit
And how could I desire closeness to a fickle man,
Whose breast holds many secrets, and whose nature is deceit?
فَلَيْتَso would that الَّذِيthat which بَيْنِيbetween me وَبَيْنَكَand between you يَنْتَهِيcomes to an end
إِلَىto حَيْثُwhere لاno طَلْحٌacacia يَرِفُّsways وَلاand no أَثْلُtamarisk
Would that what lies between me and you might end
Where no acacia sways, nor any tamarisk.
خَبُثْتَyou have become foul فَلَوْso if طُهِّرْتَyou were purified بِالْمَاءِwith water لاكْتَسَىwould surely be clothed
بِكَthrough you الْمَاءُthe water خُبْثاًin foulness لاnot يَحِلُّis permissible بِهِwith it الْغَسْلُwashing
You are foul: were you cleansed with water, the water would be clothed
Through you in foulness, making washing with it unlawful.
فَوَجْهُكَso your face مَنْحُوسٌill-omened وَكَعْبُكَand your standing سَافِلٌlow
وَقَلْبُكَand your heart مَدْغُولٌdeceitful وَعَقْلُكَand your mind مُخْتَلُّunsound
So your face is ill-omened, and your standing is low,
And your heart is deceitful, and your mind unsound.
بِكَbecause of you اسْوَدَّتِturned black الأَيَّامُthe days بَعْدَafter ضِيَائِهَاtheir brightness
وَأَصْبَحَand became نَادِيthe gathering place الْفَضْلِof virtue لَيْسَthere are not بِهِin it أَهْلُpeople
Because of you, the days turned black after their brightness,
And the hall of virtue now has no one in it.
فَلَوْso if لَمْnot تَكُنْyou were فِيin الدَّهْرِthe age مَاnot انْقَضَّswooped down حَادِثٌa calamity
بِقَوْمٍupon a people وَلاand not زَلَّتْslipped بِذِيbeneath one with أَمَلٍhope نَعْلُa sandal
So, had you not been in this age, no calamity would have swooped down
Upon a people, nor would a hopeful man's sandal have slipped.
فَمَاfor no نَكْبَةٌdisaster إِلاexcept وَأَنْتَand you رَسُولُهَاits messenger
وَلاand no خَيْبَةٌdisappointment إِلاexcept وَأَنْتَand you لَهَاfor it أَصْلُa root
For there is no disaster but you are its messenger,
And no disappointment but you are its root.
أَذُمُّI condemn زَمَانَاًan age أَنْتَyou فِيهِin it وَبَلْدَةًand a town
طَلَعْتَyou rose عَلَيْهَاover it إِنَّهُindeed it is زَمَنٌan age وَغْلُvile
I condemn an age in which you live, and a town
Over which you have risen; truly, it is a vile age.
ذِمَامُكَyour pledged protection مَخْفُورٌviolated وَعَهْدُكَand your pledge ضَائِعٌlost
وَرَأْيُكَand your judgment مَأْفُونٌfeeble وَعَقْلُكَand your mind مُخْتَلُّunsound
Your pledged protection is violated, and your pledge is lost,
And your judgment is feeble, and your mind unsound.
مَخَازٍdisgraces لَوَif انَّthat النَّجْمَthe star حُمِّلَwas made to bear بَعْضَهَاsome of them
لَعَاجَلَهُwould swiftly overtake it مِنْfrom دُونِbefore إِشْرَاقِهِits shining أَفْلُsetting
Disgraces—if a star were made to bear some of them,
Setting would swiftly overtake it before it could shine.
فَسِرْso depart غَيْرَnot مَأْسُوفٍlamented عَلَيْكَfor you فَإِنَّمَاfor only
قُصَارَىthe final outcome ذَمِيمِblameworthy الْعَهْدِthe pledge أَنْthat يُقْطَعَbe severed الْحَبْلُthe cord
So go, unlamented; for the sole
End for one faithless to his pledge is that the cord be severed.
