أَلْفَاظُهُ فِي السَّمْعِ نَغْمَةُ عُودِ
And many a boon companion, melodious in speech, as though
With a conversant whose talk is like the melody of a lute,
his words to the ear were the melody of a lute.
Its words on the ear like the music of strings.

وَتَدُلُّ لَفْظَتُهُ عَلَى الْمَقْصُودِ
A gesture from him suffices in place of his explicit speech,
Gesture from him can spare explicitness,
and his word points to what is meant.
And his phrase indicates what is meant.

His eloquence bewitched minds, so it is as though he
His eloquence has enthralled minds, as though
gives his companion the grape cluster’s choicest wine to drink.
He gives his companion to drink the juice of grapes.
