أَلاAh! لاdo not تَلُمْblame صبّاًa lovesick man عَلَىfor طُولِthe duration of سُقْمِهِhis illness
وَدَعْهُand leave him be فَلَيْسَfor ... is not الأَمْرُthe matter فِيهِin it لِحُكْمِهِwithin his control
Ah, do not blame a lovesick man for his long illness.
Blame not a lover if love makes him pine,
And leave him be, for this matter is not his to govern.
And leave him be, for he has no control.
فَلَيْسَfor ... is not الْهَوَىlove مِمَّاsomething that يُرَدُّis repelled بِحِيلَةٍby a stratagem
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it يَثْنِيbends الْفَتَىthe young man دُونَdespite عَزْمِهِhis resolve
For love is not something that can be repelled by a stratagem;
Passion is not to be thwarted by guile,
But it bends a young man despite his resolve.
It simply bends a man against his will.
وَمَاand ... not يَسْتَوِيare equal جَانٍan offender أَتَىcommitted الإِثْمَthe sin طَائِعاًwillingly
وَآخَرُand another لَمْdid not يَقْرفْهُcommit it إِلَّاexcept بِرَغْمِهِagainst his will
Nor are they equal: an offender who committed sin willingly,
One who willingly commits a sin,
And another who committed it only against his will.
Is not the same as one compelled therein.
إِذَاif مَاan emphatic particle أَقَرَّadmits الْمَرْءُa man يَوْمَاًone day بِذَنْبِهِto his sin

If a man one day admits his sin,
When a man finally admits to his wrong,
What, then, can his adversary's obstinacy achieve?
What use is his opponent's spiteful song?
