Deliver the message, O bird of the valley,

And visit the folk at dawn, reciting my words.

Wait for the guards to doze, and fly forth

Among Lebanon's leafy groves, and roam.

Perhaps an enchanting note of affection from you

Will set Shakib swaying, the star of the assembly.

He is the noble champion who, through his eloquence, revived

The legacy of a people who excelled in speaking the tongue of ḍād.

In council, you find in him an Ahnaf in character,

And in battle, an Amr and an Ibn Shaddad.

My brother in affection; enough for me that this is a kinship

Whose page is free of rancor and grudges.

He imparted literary refinement to me through speech; witness was borne

To its excellence by people, settled and nomadic alike.

Sweet is its watering-place; were the clouds to pour down

Its like, they would leave no thirsty soul on earth.

A rapture from it coursed through my heart, captivating

My ear with its beauty, turning it from the singer's song.

O son of the noble, a calamity kept me from you,

Almost shutting off my sight with barriers.

So excuse your brother; but for what ails him, he would have run

On gratitude's racecourse, like the swift runner in the lead.

    فَالدُرُّ وهْوَ صَغِيرٌ حَلْيُ أَجْيَادِ

    And take it as a gift from me, though it is small;

For pearls, though small, are adornments for necks.
