بِنَاظِرِكَthrough your gaze الْفَتَّانِbewitching آمَنْتُI believed بِالسِّحْرِin magic
وَهَلْand is there بَعْدَafter إِيمَانِthe faith of الصَّبَابَةِardent love مِنْany كُفْرِdisbelief
Through your bewitching gaze I came to believe in magic.
With your alluring eyes I believed in magic,
And after the faith of ardent love, can there be disbelief?
Is there any infidelity after the faith of youth?
فَلاso do not تَعْتَمِدْaim at بِالْهَجْرِthrough estrangement قَتْلَthe killing of مُتَيَّمٍone enslaved by love
فَإِنَّfor indeed الْمَنَايَاdeaths لاnot تَزِيدُexceed عَنِbeyond الْهَجْرِestrangement
So do not seek, through estrangement, to kill one enslaved by love;
So do not depend on estrangement to kill a lover,
For death is no worse than estrangement.
For deaths do not exceed estrangement.
فَلَوْلاكَso, were it not for you مَاnot حَلَّloosed الْهَوَىlove قَيْدَthe fetter of مَدْمَعِيmy tearful eye
وَلاnor شَبَّkindled نِيرَانَthe fires of اللَّواعِجِsearing pangs فِيin صَدْرِيmy breast
But for you, love would not have loosed the fetter of my tearful eye,
If it were not for you, desire would not have shackled my tears,
Nor kindled the fires of searing pangs within my breast.
Nor would the embers of passions have flared up in my chest.
وَإِنِّيand I indeed عَلَىdespite مَاwhat كَانَcame مِنْكَfrom you لَصَابِرٌsurely patient
لعِلْمِيَbecause I know أَنَّthat الْفَوْزَsuccess مِنْamong ثَمَرِthe fruits of الصَّبْرِpatience
And whatever has come from you, I am steadfastly patient,
And I am patient with what you have done,
For I know that success is among the fruits of patience.
Knowing that triumph is the fruit of patience.
فَلَيْتَso would that الَّذيthe one who أَهْدَىoffered الْمَلامَةَreproach فِيconcerning الْهَوىlove
تَوَسَّمَdiscerned خَيْرَاًgoodness أَوْor تَكَلَّمَspoke عَنْfrom خُبْرِknowledge
Would that the one who offered reproach for love
If only he who gave advice of blame in love,
Had discerned goodness, or spoken from knowledge.
Saw good omens or spoke of news.
رَأَىhe saw كَلَفِيmy infatuation لاnot يَسْتَفِيقُregain its senses فَظَنَّso he suspected بِيin me
هَنَاتٍfaults وَسُوءُand ill الظَّنِّsuspicion دَاعِيَةُan inducement to الْوِزْرِsin
He saw my passion never regain its senses, and suspected me of
He saw me unconscious and thought ill of me,
Faults; and ill suspicion is an inducement to sin.
And thinking badly is the cause of sin.
وَمَاذَاand what عَلَيْهِis it to him وَهْوَwhile he خَالٍis free مِنَof الْجَوَىlove's anguish
إِذَاif هِمْتُI am distraught شَوْقَاًwith longing أَوْor تَرَنَّمْتُI chant بِالشِّعْرِin verse
And what is it to him, free as he is of love's anguish,
What is it to him while he is devoid of passion,
If I am lost in longing, or chant poetry?
If I yearned with longing or recited poetry?
فَإِنْso if أَكُI am مَشْغُوفَاًlove-stricken فَذُواthen one endowed with الْحِلْمِforbearance رُبَّمَاsometimes
أَطَاعَobeyed الْهَوَىpassion وَالْحُبُّand love مِنْamong عُقَدِthe knots of السِّحْرِmagic
If I am enthralled, a man of sober judgment may at times
If I am obsessed then even the forbearing
Yield to passion; and love is one of magic's knots.
Sometimes yield to desire and love is a spell of magic.
وَأَيُّand which امْرِئٍman يَقْوَىhas strength عَلىto رَدِّthe repelling of لَوْعَةٍa burning anguish
إِذَاwhen الْتَهَبَتْit flares أَرْبَتْit surpasses عَلَىbeyond وَهَجِthe heat of الْجَمْرِembers
And what man has the strength to repel a burning anguish
And which man can restrain an outburst
Which, once it flares, surpasses the heat of embers?
When it flares up and catches fire on burning coal?
عَلَىalthough أَنَّنِيI indeed لَمْdid not آتِcommit فيin الْحُبِّlove زَلَّةًa lapse
تَغُضّdetracts بِذِكْرِيfrom my reputation فِيin الْمَحَافِلِgatherings أَوْor تُزْرِيdisgraces
Yet I have committed no lapse in love
On the condition that I have not slipped in love
That lowers my name in gatherings or brings me disgrace.
To embarrass you if mentioned in gatherings.
وَلَكِنَّنِيbut I طَوَّفْتُroamed فِيin عَالَمِthe realm of الصِّبَاyouth
وَعُدْتُand I returned وَلَمْand did not تَعْلَقْbecome tainted بِفَاضِحَةٍby a scandal أُزْرِيmy garments
Rather, I roamed the realm of youth
Rather I roamed in the world of youth
And returned with my garments untainted by scandal.
And returned without being attached to any disgrace.
سَجِيَّةُthe disposition of نَفْسٍa soul آثَرَتْpreferred مَاwhat يَسُرُّهَاpleases it
وَلِلنَّاسِand people have أَخْلاقٌdispositions عَلَىin وَفْقِهاaccordance with them تَجْرِيthey proceed
Such is the disposition of a soul that preferred what delighted it;
It is the disposition of a soul that chose what pleases it
And people have dispositions by which they live.
And people have morals according to it.
مَلَكْتُI restrained يَدِيmy hand عَنْfrom كُلِّevery سُوءٍevil ومَنْطِقِيand my speech
فَعِشْتُso I lived بَرِيءَpure النَّفْسِsoul مِنْfrom دَنَسِthe taint of الْعُذْرِexcuse (as written)
I restrained my hand from every evil, and my speech as well,
I controlled my hands from all evil and my words
Thus I lived pure of soul, free of the stain of excuse [possibly: treachery].
So I lived with a pure soul without blemish of excuse.
وَأَحْسَنْتُand I thought well ظَنِّيmy opinion بِالصَّدِيقِof the friend وَرُبَّمَاand sometimes
لَقِيتُI met عَدُوِّيmy enemy بِالطَّلاقَةِwith a welcoming face والْبِشْرِand cheerfulness
And I thought well of my friend, and at times
I thought well of a friend and perhaps
Met my enemy with a welcoming face and cheer.
I met my enemy cheerfully and with glad tidings.
فَأَصْبَحْتُso I became مَأْثُورَrenowned for الْخِلالِvirtues مُحَبَّبَاًbeloved
إِلَىto النَّاسِpeople مَرْضِيَّesteemed in السَّرِيرَةِinward character والْهَجْرِand estrangement (as written)
Thus I became renowned for my virtues, beloved
So I became well-known for my manners, beloved
By people, esteemed in inward character and estrangement [possibly: outward conduct].
To people, pleasing, chaste, and aloof.
فَمَاso not أَنَاI مَطْلُوبٌam pursued بِوَتْرٍfor a wrong لِمَعْشَرٍto a people
وَلاnor أَنَاI مَلْهُوفُam anguished الْجَنَانِheart عَلىover وَتْرِan unavenged wrong
So no people pursue me to avenge a wrong,
I am not wanted by a musical ensemble
Nor am I heartsick over an unavenged wrong.
Nor am I obsessed with tunes on a string.
رَضِيتُI was content مِنَfrom الدُّنْيَاthis world وإِنْand though كُنْتُI was مثْرِياًwealthy
بِعِفَّةِwith the integrity of نَفْسٍa soul لاnot تَمِيلُinclining إِلَىtoward الْوَفْرِabundant wealth
I was content to take from this world, though I was wealthy,
I was content with the life even if I were wealthy
The integrity of a soul that has no leaning toward riches.
With the chastity of a soul that does not incline to affluence.
وَأَخْلَصْتُand I was sincere للِرَّحْمَنِto the All-Merciful فِيin مَاwhat نَوَيْتُهُI intended it
فَعَامَلَنِيso He treated me بِاللُّطْفِwith kindness مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere لاnot أَدْرِيI know
And I was sincere toward the All-Merciful in what I intended,
And I was sincere to the Merciful in my intentions
So He dealt kindly with me in ways I did not know.
So He dealt with me gently from where I knew not.
إِذَاwhen مَاindeed (emphatic) أَرادَwills اللهُGod خَيْرَاًgood بِعَبْدِهِfor His servant
هَدَاهُHe guided him بِنُورِby the light of الْيُسْرِease فِيin ظُلْمَةِthe darkness of الْعُسْرِhardship
Whenever God wills good for His servant,
If God wills good for His servant,
He guides him by the light of ease in the darkness of hardship.
He guides him with the light of facility in the darkness of hardship.
فَياso O بْنَson of أَبِيmy father وَالنَّاسُand people أَبْنَاءُchildren of واحِدٍone
تَقَلَّدْwear as a necklace وَصَاتِيmy counsel فَهْيَfor it is لُؤْلُؤَةُa pearl of الْفِكْرِthought
So, O son of my father—all people are children of one—
So O Ibn Abi, people are the sons of one,
Wear my counsel as a necklace: it is the pearl of thought.
Take on my morals for they are the pearl of thought.
إِذَاif شِئْتَyou wish أَنْto تَحْيَاlive سَعِيدَاًhappily فَلاthen do not تَكُنْbe
لَدُوداًcontentious وَلاand do not تَدْفَعْrepel يَدَthe hand of اللِّينِgentleness بِالْقَسْرِwith force
If you wish to live happily, do not be
If you want to live happily then do not be
Contentious, nor repel the hand of gentleness with force.
Harsh nor repel the hand of gentleness with force.
وَلاand do not تَحْتَقِرْdespise ذَاone with فَاقَةٍpoverty فَلَرُبَّمَاfor quite possibly
لَقِيتَyou meet بِهِin him شَهْمَاًa noble man يُبِرُّsurpasses عَلىbeyond الْمُثْرِيthe wealthy
And do not despise one in need, for you may well
Do not scorn one in need for perhaps
Find in him a noble man who surpasses the wealthy.
You will meet him as a bold one who shows kindness to the wealthy.
فَرُبَّfor many a فَقِيرٍpoor man يَمْلأُfills القَلْبَthe heart حِكْمَةًwith wisdom
وَرُبَّand many a غَنِيٍّrich man لاnot يَرِيشُfeathers arrows وَلاnor يَبْرِيshapes arrow shafts
For many a poor man fills the heart with wisdom,
Many a poor man may fill the heart with wisdom
And many a rich man neither feathers arrows nor shapes their shafts.
While many a wealthy man does not feather nor hatch.
وَكُنْand be وَسَطاًmoderate لاnot مُشْرَئبَّاًcraning upward إِلىtoward السُّهَاal-Suha
وَلاnor قَانِعَاًservile يَبْغِيseeking التَّزَلُّفَingratiation بِالصُّغْرِthrough abasement
And keep to the middle, not craning toward al-Suha,
Be moderate, neither leaning towards recklessness
Nor servile, seeking favor through abasement.
Nor content, seeking favor through belittlement.
فَأَحْمَدُfor most praiseworthy أَخْلاقِthe traits of الْفَتَىa man مَاthose which تَكَافَأَتْare balanced
بِمَنْزِلَةٍat a station بَيْنَbetween التَّوَاضُعِhumility وَالْكِبْرِand pride
For a man's most praiseworthy traits are those balanced
The best of a young man’s morals are what equalized,
At a station between humility and pride.
At a position between humility and pride.
وَلاand do not تَعْتَرِفْsubmit بِالذُّلِّto humiliation فِيin طَلَبِseeking الْغِنَىwealth
فَإِنَّfor indeed الْغِنَىwealth فِيin الذُلِّhumiliation شَرٌّis worse مِنَthan الْفَقْرِpoverty
And do not accept humiliation in seeking wealth,
Do not admit to humiliation in seeking wealth,
For wealth in humiliation is worse than poverty.
For wealth with humiliation is worse than poverty.
وَإِيَّاكَand beware وَالتَّسْلِيمَand assent بِالْغَيبِto the unseen قَبْلَbefore أَنْthat
تَرَىyou see حُجَّةًevidence تَجْلُوyou clarify بِهَاwith it غَامِضَthe obscure part of الأَمْرِthe matter
And beware of assenting to the unseen before
And beware of surrendering to the unseen before
You see evidence with which to clear the matter's obscurity.
You see evidence that clarifies the ambiguous matter.
ودارِand be tactful with الَّذيthe one whom تَرْجُوyou hope for وَتَخْشَىand fear وِدَادَهُhis affection
وَكُنْand be مِنْof مَوَدَّاتِthe affections of الْقُلُوبِhearts عَلَىon حِذْرِguard
And be tactful with the one whose affection you hope for and fear,
And be cautious of the affection of those whose love and hatred you desire,
And be wary of the affections of hearts.
And be of those whose hearts are alert.
فَقَدْfor indeed يَغْدرُmay betray الْخِلُّthe close friend الْوَفِيُّloyal لِهَفْوَةٍover a slip
وَيَحْلُوand grows sweet الرِّضَاgoodwill بَعْدَafter الْعَدَاوَةِenmity والشَّرِّand evil
For a loyal friend may betray you over a slip,
For the intimate friend may betray due to a whim
And goodwill grows sweet after enmity and evil.
And pleasure comes after enmity and evil.
وَفِيand among النَّاسِpeople مَنْone whom تَلْقَاهُyou meet him فِيin زِيِّthe garb of عَابِدٍa worshipper
وَلِلْغَدْرِand treachery has فِيin أحْشَائِهِhis entrails عَقْرَبٌa scorpion تَسْرِيthat creeps
And among people is one you meet in a worshipper's garb,
And among people there are those you meet in the guise of a devout worshipper
While in his entrails a scorpion of treachery creeps.
Yet in their intestines lies a scorpion that creeps.
إِذَاwhen أَمْكَنَتْهُit enables him فُرْصَةٌan opportunity نَزَعَتْdrew بِهِhim along
إِلَىtoward الشَّرِّevil أَخْلاقٌdispositions نَبَتْنَthey grew عَلىupon غِمْرِrancor
When an opportunity presents itself to him, he is drawn
If an opportunity enables them, their nature—that grew
Toward evil by dispositions that grew from rancor.
On treason—takes them to evil.
وَلاand do not تَحْسَبَنَّever think الْحِلْمَforbearance يَمْنَعُprevents أَهْلَهُits possessors
وُقُوعthe occurrence of الأَذَىharm فَالْمَاءُfor water وَالنَّارُand fire مِنْfrom صَخْرِrock
And do not think forbearance keeps its possessors from
Nor should you think forbearance prevents its people
Doing harm: water and fire both come from rock.
From harm occurring, for water and fire are from a stone.
فَهَذِيso this is وَصَاتِيmy counsel فَاحْتَفِظْهاso preserve it تَفُزْyou will gain بِماwith what
تَمَنَّيْتَyou wished for مِنْof نَيْلِattaining السَّعَادَةِhappiness فيin الدَّهْرِlife
This is my counsel; preserve it, and you will gain what
So these are my morals, retain them and you will obtain
You have wished for: the attainment of happiness in life.
What you wished for in attaining fortune in life.
فَإِنِّيfor I امْرُؤٌa man جَرَّبْتُI experienced دَهْرِيmy times وَزَادَنِيand enriched me
بِهِof them خِبْرَةًexperience صَبْرِيmy patience عَلَىwith الْحُلْوِthe sweet وَالْمُرِّand the bitter
For I am a man who has tested my times, and I gained further
I am one who experienced my fate and it
Knowledge of them through my patience with the sweet and the bitter.
Increased me in wisdom to be patient with the sweet and the bitter.
بَلَغْتُI reached مَدَىthe span of خَمْسِينَfifty وَازْدَدْتُand grew by سَبْعَةًseven
جَعَلْتُI began بِهَاthrough them أَمْشِيI walk عَلىin قَدَمِthe footsteps of الْخِضْرِal-Khidr
I reached fifty years, then added seven,
I reached fifty years of age and gained seven more
Through which I began to walk in al-Khidr's footsteps.
With which I walk in the footsteps of Al-Khidr.
فَكَيْفَso how تَرَانِيdo you see me الْيَوْمَtoday أَخْشَىI fear ضَلالَةًgoing astray
وَشَيْبِيَand my gray hair مِصْباحٌa lamp عَلَىby نُورِهِits light أَسْرِيI travel at night
How, then, can you see me today fearing to stray,
How then do you see me today fearing misguidance
When my gray hair is a lamp by whose light I travel at night?
While my white hair is a lantern by whose light I walk?
أَقُولُI speak بِطَبْعٍby native gift لَسْتُI am not أَحْتَاجُin need بَعْدَهُbeyond it
إِلىto الْمَنْهَلِthe watering place الْمَطْرُوقِfrequented وَالْمَنْهَجِand the path الْوَعْرِrugged
I speak by native gift, beyond which I have no need
I say by nature I no longer need
Of the frequented watering place or the rugged path.
After it the frequented spring or the rugged path.
وَلِيand I have مِنْfrom جَنانِيmy heart إِنْif عَزَمْتُI resolve وَمِقْوَليand my tongue
سِرَاجٌa lamp وَعَضْبٌand a keen sword ذَاthis one يُضيئُgives light وَذَاand that one يَفْرِيcleaves
From my heart, when I resolve, and from my tongue, I have
In my soul, if I intended, lies a lamp and volume
A lamp and a keen sword: this gives light, and that cleaves.
That gives light, and that makes one recoil.
إِذَاwhen جَاشَsurges طَبْعِيmy native gift فَاضَoverflows بِالدُّرِّwith pearls مَنْطِقِيmy speech
وَلاand no عَجَبٌwonder فَالدُّرُّfor pearls يَنْشَأُare born فِيin الْبَحْرِthe sea
When my native gift surges, my speech overflows with pearls,
If my disposition overflows, my words pour with pearls
And no wonder: pearls are born in the sea.
And it is no wonder for pearls originate from the sea.
تَدَبَّرْponder مَقَالِيmy words إِنْif جَهِلْتَyou do not know خَلِيفَتِيmy successor (as written)
لِتَعْرِفَنِيso that you may know me فَالسَّيْفُfor the sword يُعْرَفُis known بِالأَثْرِby its mark
Ponder my words if you do not know my successor [possibly: my nature],
Contemplate my words if you do not know my successor
So that you may know me: a sword is known by its mark.
In order to know me, for the sword is known by its strike.
وَلاand do not تَعْجَبَنْever marvel مِنْat مَنْطِقِيmy speech إِنْif تَأَرَّجَتْgrew fragrant
بِهِwith it كُلُّevery أَرْضٍland فَهْوَfor it is رَيْحَانَةُthe sweet basil of الْعَصْرِthe age
And do not marvel at my speech, should fragrance spread
Do not wonder at my words if all the land
Through it across every land: it is the age's sweet basil.
Is perfumed by it, for it is the basil of the age.
سَيَذْكُرُنِيwill remember me بِالشِّعْرِthrough poetry مَنْone who لَمْhas not يُلاقِنِيmet me
وَذِكْرُand the remembrance of الفَتَىa man بَعْدَafter الْمَمَاتِdeath مِنَpart of الْعُمْرِlife
Those who have never met me will remember me through poetry,
After death, he who did not meet me will remember me in poetry
And a man's remembrance after death is part of his life.
For the memory of a youth after death is from lives.
