ذَنْبِيmy sin إِلَيْكَagainst you غَرَامِيmy ardent love
فَهَلْthen is? يَحِلُّis permissible مَلامِيblaming me
My offense against you is my passion;
My sin against you is my ardent love;
is it then right to reproach me?
Is blaming me, then, justified?
O you who wrong me فِيin هَوَاهُlove for him
هَلَّاwhy did you not? رَعَيْتَyou honored ذِمَامِيmy claim to your care
O my tyrant in his love,
O you who wrong me in my love for you,
why have you not honored my bond?
Why did you not honor my claim to your care?
حَتَّامَuntil when? تُعْرِضُyou turn away عَنِّيfrom me
وَلاand not تَرُدُّyou return سَلامِيmy greeting
How long will you turn away from me
How long will you turn away from me
and not return my greeting?
And not return my greeting?
عَطْفَاًcompassion! عَلَيَّon me فَإِنِّيfor I

Have compassion on me, for truly
Have compassion on me, for
your love has worn my bones away.
Love of you has worn away my bones.
فَكَيْفَhow, then? تُنْكِرُyou deny وَجْدِيmy longing
أَمَاhave you not? رَأَيْتَyou saw سَقَامِيmy sickness
How, then, can you deny my anguish?
How, then, can you deny my longing?
Have you not seen my sickness?
Have you not seen my sickness?
وَيْلاهُalas for me! مِمَّاfrom what أُلاقِيI endure
مِنْfrom لَوْعَتِيmy burning anguish وَهُيَامِيand my lovesick madness
Ah, woe for all that I endure
Alas for what I endure
from my burning torment and delirious love!
From my burning anguish and lovesick madness!
رَقَّfelt pity النَّسِيمُthe breeze لِحَالِيfor my plight
وَسَالَand flowed دَمْعُtears الْغَمَامِthe clouds
The breeze took pity on my plight,
The breeze took pity on my plight,
and the raincloud’s tears streamed;
And the clouds' tears flowed.
وَسَاعَدَتْنِيand they shared my grief فَنَاحَتْthen they wailed
عَلَيَّover me وِرْقُgray ones الْحَمَامِthe doves
and, joining me, they wailed—
And they shared my grief, then wailed
over me—the gray doves.
Over me—the gray doves.
فَيَاso, O سَمِيرَnight companion فُؤَادِيmy heart
فِيin يَقْظَتِيmy waking وَمَنَامِيand my sleep
O intimate companion of my heart,
So, O my heart's companion by night,
in waking and in dreams,
In my waking and my sleep,
مَتَىwhen? يَفُوزُhe attains بِوَصْلٍunion
Sami
when shall he attain union—
When will he attain union—
Sami, captive to your glance?
