    بَلِ الصَّدِيقُ الَّذِي تَزْكُو شَمَائِلُهُ

    A friend is not one whose ancestry is exalted;

    Rather, a friend is one whose character is pure.

    أَوْ نَابَكَ الْهَمُّ لَمْ تَفْتُرْ وَسَائِلُهُ

    If time troubles you, his resolve does not fail;

    Or if sorrow befalls you, his efforts to help do not flag.

    He cares for you, whether far away or close at hand,

    And his generous gifts of goodness reach you without interruption.

    Not like one who professes affection, while within him

    His cauldrons boil over the embers of his grudges.

    He censures his brother's deed, displaying regret,

    To make people believe that grief envelops him.

    فَاحْذَرْهُ وَاعْلَمْ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ خَاذِلُهُ

    And that, on his part, is hostility cloaked in courtesy;

    So beware of him, and know that God will forsake him.
