لاdo not تَعْذِلَنِّيreproach me عَلَىfor وَفْرٍabundant wealth سَمَحْتُI gave freely بِهِwith it
لِلْمُعْتَفِينَto those seeking bounty فَإِنِّيfor indeed I مَاجِدُnoble الشِّيَمِcharacter traits
Do not reproach me for the fortune I freely gave away
Do not reproach me for wealth I gave freely
to those who seek my bounty—for I am noble in character.
To those seeking bounty, for I am noble in character.
إِنْif لَمْnot يَكُنْbe لِلْفَتَىfor the young man جُودٌgenerosity يَسُدُّhe meets بِهِwith it
مَفَاقِرَneeds الصَّحْبِthe companions فَالْمَثْرَاةُthen wealth كَالْعَدَمِlike nothingness
If a man has no generosity with which to meet
If a young man has no generosity with which to meet
his companions’ needs, then riches are as nothing.
His companions' needs, then wealth is as nothing.
فَإِنْso if يَكُنْbe قَلَّdwindled مَالِيmy wealth بَعْدَafter وَفْرَتِهِits abundance
فَإِنَّthen indeed مَالِيَmy wealth لاnot يَقْوَىis strong enough عَلَىfor كَرَمِيmy generosity
So if my wealth has dwindled after its abundance,
So if my wealth has dwindled after its abundance,
then surely my wealth cannot outlast my generosity.
Then indeed my wealth is no match for my generosity.
