رَبِّmy Lord خُذْexact لِيfor me مِنfrom الْعُيُونِthe eyes بِحَقِّيmy rightful due
وَأَجِرْنِيand protect me مِنْfrom ظَالِمٍan oppressor لَيْسَdoes not يَبْقِيspare
My Lord, exact my due from the eyes,
My Lord, grant me sight of the eyes, by my right
and protect me from an oppressor who spares nothing.
And save me from an unjust one who leaves naught
قَدْindeed تَوَقَّيْتُI guarded myself مَاas much as اسْتَطَعْتُI could مِنَagainst الْحُبْlove

I have guarded myself against love as best I could,
I've avoided what I could of love, but what can avoidance do
but what can caution ward off?
And I've been gentle with my heart, but the agony of passion has defeated my gentleness
وَتَرَفَّقْتُand I was gentle بِالْفُؤَادِwith the heart وَلَكِنْbut

And I treated my heart gently, but
Blame me not for love, for the obscurity of truth excuses and refutes all blaming
the burning anguish of longing overcame my gentleness.
Ask my tears, for they will tell what's in my conscience and admit my sincerity

I've met my agony through eyes that taught me love's lesson by meeting them

Perhaps one day I'll succeed in an intimacy by which I'll rule the emirate of love
كَيْفَhow لِيfor me بِالنَّجَاةِescape مِنْfrom شَرَكِthe snare of الْحُبْlove

How can I escape from love's snare
unharmed, when love holds me in bondage?
قَدْindeed تَلَقَّيْتُI received لَوْعَتِيmy burning anguish مِنْfrom عُيُونٍeyes

I have received my burning anguish from eyes
that taught me love's lesson firsthand.
وَرَشَوْتُand I bribed الْهَوَىlove بِلُؤْلُؤِwith the pearls of دَمْعِيmy tears

And I bribed love with the pearls of my tears,
and bribes are a means of rising in rank.
فَلَعَلِّيso perhaps I أَفُوزُI win يَوْماًone day بِوَصْلٍunion

So perhaps one day I shall win union,
through which I assume the rulership of love.
