أَتَزْعُمُنِيdo you consider me خِلاًّa close friend وَتَهْجُرُand you forsake ساحَتِيmy courtyard
أَتَزْعُمُنِي خِلاًّ وَتَهْجُرُ ساحَتِي
عَلَىwith غَيْرِno ذَنْبٍfault إِنَّindeed ذَاthis لَعَجِيبُindeed strange
عَلَى غَيْرِ ذَنْبٍ إِنَّ ذَا لَعَجِيبُ
Do you call me a close friend, yet forsake my courtyard
You think me an unfaithful friend, and spurn my abode,
Without any fault of mine? This is indeed strange.
Though I am guilty of no wrong - how strange your reproach!
إِذَاif لَمْnot يَكُنْthere is بَيْنَbetween الْمُحِبِّينَthe lovers وُصْلَةٌa bond
إِذَا لَمْ يَكُنْ بَيْنَ الْمُحِبِّينَ وُصْلَةٌ
تُؤَكِّدُstrengthens عَهْداًa pledge فَالصُّدُودُthen estrangement قَرِيبُnear
تُؤَكِّدُ عَهْداً فَالصُّدُودُ قَرِيبُ
If there is no bond between lovers
When between lovers there is no token of affection,
That strengthens a pledge, then estrangement is near.
That confirms a pact, estrangement is near at hand.
وإِنَّand indeed وِدادَaffection الْقَلْبِthe heart ماas long as لَمْnot يَكُنْthere is لَهُfor it
وإِنَّ وِدادَ الْقَلْبِ ما لَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ
دَلِيلٌproof عَلَىof إِخْلاصِهِits sincerity لَمُرِيبُindeed suspect
دَلِيلٌ عَلَى إِخْلاصِهِ لَمُرِيبُ
And the heart's affection, if it has no
And indeed the heart's affection, if it has no sign
Proof of its sincerity, is indeed suspect.
To vouch for its sincerity, is dubious.
