وَبَاكِيَةٍand a weeping one شَجَتْgrieved قَلْبِيmy heart بِلَحْنٍwith a melody
تَهِيجُare stirred لَهُby it الْمَسامِعُthe ears وَالْقُلوبُand the hearts
And a weeping one grieved my heart with a melody,
With a lament that pierced my heart with its melody
At which ears and hearts are stirred.
Stirring hearts and minds alike
سَأَلْتُI asked فَقِيلَso it was said قَدْindeed فَقَدَتْshe lost حَبِيباًa beloved
وَهَلْand does يَبْقَىremain عَلَىin الدُّنْيَاthis world حَبِيبُa beloved
I asked, and was told she had lost a beloved.
I asked and was told she had lost a beloved
And does any beloved remain in this world?
Does any beloved remain in this world?
بَكَيْتُI wept لَهَاfor her وَلَمْand did not أَفْهَمْunderstand صداهَاher echo
وَقَدْand sometimes يَبْكِيweeps مِنَfrom الطَّرَبِrapture الْغَرِيبُthe stranger
I wept for her, yet did not understand her echo.
I wept for her though I understood not her cries
And sometimes a stranger weeps from rapture.
For even strangers may weep out of joy
